ben gollings.jpgOctober 23: The countdown is on for the Gold Coast International 7s - Heaven's Game Played In Paradise and Rugby's latest Olympic sport which will be showcased at Albert Park, Surfers Paradise on November 7 and 8.

Over 190 players in 16 men's teams in four pools, including the Michael O'Connor-coached Australian Sevens Team, will play 44 games over two action-packed days.

Tournament director and current Australian Sevens manager Luca Liussi is excited about the Gold Coast hosting a major 7s tournament so soon after the announcement that 7s will be on the gold medal radar in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

"The Australian teams have just come off a recent selection camp at the AIS in Canberra as they prepare for the IRB World Sevens and the Gold Coast International 7s tournament will be a key in their build up," said Mr Liussi.

"It will be the first time the Gold Coast has had the opportunity to stage such a tournament and I'm sure everyone will fall in love with the game and the atmosphere.

"There will be plenty of action on the field and a real carnival atmosphere around the ground.

"We are planning a fun, festival type weekend with an international flavour and this will be reflected in the teams, the food, the colour, costumes and of course the rugby.

"With the announcement of Sevens Rugby becoming an Olympic sport the game of Rugby and Sevens in Australia will grow rugby fans.jpgenormously and to promote the Gold Coast internationally as a tourist and high performance sporting destination is very exciting.

"We expect to involve all aspects of rugby development on the Gold Coast: Volunteers from schools and clubs, referees, judiciary and development officers with the vision to grow the game on the Gold Coast. We want Gold Coasters to ... get involved!"

A who's who of rugby, including dual international and Australian coach O'Connor and Sevens Rugby's two highest pointscorers, England's Gold Coast-based legend and Australian Sevens technical advisor Ben Gollings and Fijian legend Waisale Serevi will all be involved in the tournament.

Organisers will announce the final 16 teams and the official draw early next week.
