MORE OLYMPIC NAME GAMES...

paul lee at water cube.jpgBEIJING, CHING: The Olympic Games in Beijing will have athletes attending from a record 205 separate National Olympic Committees representing their country. This mix of cultures, ethnicity and religions brings together people with many different names, some of which are appropriate for their Sport (or not) and others, well.  PAUL LEE REPORTS...

In Cycling, Yolande SPEEDY from South Africa is a competitor in the Mountain Bike event and Ben SWIFT from Great Britain is in the Road Race. Both will have to live up to their names to reach the podium. Still on the speed theme, Bruce QUICK from Australia is entered into the Shooting Rapid Fire Pistol event, very appropriate.

Australia's Chantal MEEK will have to be anything but, in order to challenge for medals in the Kayaking K1 and K4 500m event. Liz YELLING from Great Britain won't be doing too much of that after the Marathon and Sabine ZIMMER from Germany may need one of those ‘frames' after she finishes the 20km race walk event.

The Chinese Baseball team will need to decide who's on first. It could be Lu, Xu or Bu on first but my money is on Hou. Then they can say with a straight face that Hou's on first, but don't get me started on 2nd base and I don't know is on 3rd.... gold.

I wonder if Tamas KISS from the Hungarian Canoe team will get together with Tim LIPS from the Netherlands Equestrian team? Not that there's anything wrong with that..

French Gymnast, Marin PETIT is certainly that being only 1.56m tall and weighing just 42kg. I wonder if Fancisco PICASSO, a 50m swimmer from Uruguay is into art? With so many athletes living up to their names I don't even want to think about what Marton SIK from Hungary will do at the end of his event!

There are some athletes who should consider changing sports however....

Matt TARGETT the Australian swimmer should perhaps consider archery. Wallace SPEARMON from the USA could move from the track to the field and take up the javelin. German track athlete Verena SAILOR might be better off on a boat and American softball player, Lauren LAPPIN may make a good swimmer, who knows?
