Schipper, who also won bronze in the 100m butterfly on Day 3, clocked 2:06.26 to finish behind Chinese pair Zige Liu (2:04.18) and Liuyang Jiao (2:04.72).

Liu's time was a world record and the first gold medal for the host nation at the Water Cube, sending the crowd into a frenzy. DAVID LYALL AOC REPORTS....

The 21-year-old Schipper came into these Games, her second, with the goal of collecting an individual medal. Now she has two with the 4x100m medley relay to come and despite not winning and losing her world record Schipper was pleased with the outcome of her efforts.

"I just came into this meet wanting an individual medal and now I get to go home with two individual medals so I've exceeded my expectations and I'm very happy with it all," Schipper said.

The girl known as ‘the Sparrow' said the week had been tough emotionally for all the swimmers.

"It's been a pretty emotional week with all of my swims and everybody else's swims and everything," Schipper said.

"I've definitely learnt a lot from this meet and hopefully I'll be able to do better next time."

She didn't know too much about the two Chinese women but said she knew there would be many challengers to her number one world ranking.

"I didn't know a lot [about the Chinese]. I suppose but you can never really discount anyone in an Olympic year and a lot of things happen. I'm not surprised [by them]," she said.

Schipper was quick to commit herself to another shot at an individual medal in the event, saying she was keen to swim on to the 2012 London Olympic Games.

"I'll keep going and all going well I'll be back here in four years."
