ELLEN FULLERTON THROUGH TO 200 FREESTYLE FINAL AT WORLD UNIS

Swimming Australia, July 9, 2015: After winning bronze in the 200m individual medley Ellen Fullerton (Queensland University of Technology) has qualified for tonight’s 200m freestyle final at The World University Games in South Korea.

Fullerton was joined in last night’s semis by 100m freestyle bronze medalist Amy Matsuo (Ultimo TAFE) but it was Fullerton’s 2:00.93 which saw her qualify seventh while Matsuo’s 2:01.07 missed the final by one place.

In the women’s 50m backstroke, Holly Barrett (University of Western Australia) and Hayley White (University of Sydney) lined up for the Uniroos.

Barrett already in good form claiming bronze in the women’s 50m butterfly on Sunday, and continuing her run with the fastest time overall of 28.43 in the heats.
 
She finished second in her semi-final in a time of 28.61 to comfortably qualify for the final. Hayley White unfortunately didn’t make it through to the semi-finals with her time of 29.48 placing her 21st overall.
 
The men’s 100m butterfly semis saw Nicholas Brown (University of Western Australia) 11th in 53.45 and Keiran Qaium 13th in 53.58.
 
Earlier, in the men’s 1500m freestyle, Queensland University of Technology engineering student Jack McLoughlin swam through to the final after qualifying seventh fastest in 15:21:82. Great Britain’s Jay Lelliott and Japan’s Ayatsugu Hirai will be the men to beat if McLoughlin is to stand atop the podium.

Meanwhile in today’s heats:

-        Bronze medallist in the 1500m Kiah Melverton has qualified third fastest after three heats of the 800m freestyle, clocking 8:42.17.

-       The Australian men have qualified fourth into the final of the 4x20m freestyle relay in 7:22.66 behind USA, Japan and France.

-       Barratt (25.39) fourth and Matsuo (25.69) 11th have qualified for tonight’s 50m freestyle semi-finals.

-       Jessica Hansen has qualified in 13th position for the 50m breaststroke semi-finals in 32.03 while;

-       Tianni Gilmour is 12th into the 200m butterfly (2:14.28) semi-finals.
