Seebohm and Campbell lead Aussies to six gold in Hong Kong World Cup - Day 2

Swimming Australia, September 27, 2015:
World champions Emily Seebohm and Cate Campbell have led Australian swimmers to a stunning six gold medals and 16 medals overall on a successful final day of competition at the Fina World Cup in Hong Kong overnight.

Seebohm continued her 100m backstroke dominance, clocking 58.88 to score a comfortable win over Olympic champion Missy Franklin (USA) 1:01.18 with Australia’s London Olympian Belinda Hocking taking the bronze in 1:01.87 in an encouraging start to her return to the pool.

Campbell (53.60) proved too slick and too strong for Hungarian “Iron Lady” Katina Hosszu (54.42) with American Madison Kennedy third in 55.14 in the 100m freestyle.

It followed Campbell’s win over sister Bronte in the 50m freestyle on the opening day in what has been a timely return to competition after the Kazan World Championships.

In the most exciting race of the night Australia’s Nic Brown dead-heated with Russia’s Vlacheslav Prudnikov in the 100m butterfly with both swimmers clocking 53.64.

In other gold medal swims, Miami’s Dan Smith made it a golden double for the meet, adding the 200m freestyle to his 400m freestyle win on day one.

Smith clocked 1:48.81 to take the win over Serbia’s Velimir Stjepanovic (1:48.90) with fellow Australian Jacob Hansford taking the bronze in 1:49.07.

And competing in his first World Cup, Australia’s Tomas Elliot clocked 2:01.82 to lead an Australian quinella from Kazmir Boscovic (2:02.01) in the 200m individual medley with Australia’s Kenneth To (2:03.02) fourth.

The other Australian gold medal went to Olympian Ashley Delaney (25.55) in the 50m backstroke in another Dolphins 1-2, with his fellow Kazan team mate Josh Beaver (25.74) second.

Beaver was later second (1:59.29) to Yuki Shirai (JPN) 1:58.68 with Delaney third in  2:00.83 in the 200m backstroke final.

In other events Australia’s Tommy Sucipto (1:01.96) and Matthew Treloar (1:02.01) were third and fourth in the 100m breaststroke;

Holly Barratt 26.53 finished second in the 50m butterfly and

Te Haumi Maxwell was third in the 50m freestyle in 22.68.
