Swimming Australia, October 5, 2015:
Brisbane backstroke queen Emily Seebohm has maintained her unbeaten Fina World Cup record to win her fifth straight 100m backstroke gold medal as the Asian leg wound up in Singapore overnight.

The reigning world champion from Kazan in July has racked up victories in Moscow, Paris, Hong Kong, Beijing and now Singapore.

And she has produced world class times in a display of quality swims – clocking times all under 59 seconds; winning the world crown in Kazan in 58.26; Moscow (58.88) and then Paris (58.91) before embarking on the Asian legs in Hong Kong (58.88), Beijing (58.59) and Singapore (58.72) over the last 10 days.

In four of the five wins she kept Hungary’s “Iron Lady” Katinka Hosszu in second place and also Olympic champion Missy Franklin at bay in three of those swims.

There could have been more gold in Singapore but Day One was cancelled because of the haze created by raging bushfires in Indonesia raised concerns over increasing Pollutants Standard Index (PSI) levels.

But Day Two saw competition resume but without the men’s 1500 metres freestyle and the Australians continued on their winning ways.

Seebohm was again joined on top of the podium by 2013 World Champion and 4x100m freestyle team mate from Kazan, Cate Campbell who maintained her unbeaten World Cup run, adding gold in the 100m freestyle to her previous wins in Hong Kong and Beijing.

Cate again kept reigning world champion, sister Bronte at bay clocking 53.09 to Bronte’s 53.58.

In the men’s 200m freestyle, Gold Coast’s Dan Smith also kept his 200m freestyle unbeaten record in tact, clocking 1:48.15 to add to his wins in Paris, Hong Kong and Beijing.

Smith’s growth on the international scene will be greatly enhanced as he returns home to begin his campaign to qualify for next year’s Olympics.

While Nunawading’s Ashley Delaney maintained his amazing consistency in the men’s backstroke winning the 50m backstroke in 25.30 and finishing second in the 200m in 1.58.66.

Throughout the five World Cups, the London Olympian has chalked up four wins, five seconds and two thirds for 11 podium finishes.

In other events in Singapore: Kenneth To won silver in the 200m individual medley in 2:02.12; teenagers, Kyle Chalmers second (22.52) and Te Haumi Maxwell third (22.68) in the 50m freestyle; Sally Hunter second in the 50m breaststroke (31.50) and third in the 200m breaststroke (2:27.96) and Holly Barratt second in the women’s 50m butterfly in 26.57.
