Swimming Australia, December 17, 2015:
Commercial’s Cate Campbell and St Peters Western’s Cameron McEvoy have tonight wrapped successful outings at the Queensland State Open Championships, with tearaway wins in the 50 metre freestyle finals at the Sleeman Aquatic Centre tonight.

Campbell, who has raced without little sister, dual world champion Bronte (out injured with an inflamed hip) this week, was too classy and too slick for the field.

Showing the style that has made her one of the best sprinters in the world, Cate added the 50m gold to her win in the 100m in a time of 24.12 – just 0.16 outside her best time of 23.96 – which just happens to be the Commonwealth and Australian record.

Emma McKeon (St Peters Western) topped off her outstanding week, which saw her win the 100m butterfly and 200m freestyle, finished second in 24.99 with London Olympic relay gold medallist Brittany Elmslie third in 25.36.

The Gold Coast’s McEvoy continued his freestyle assault, winning a rare treble in the 50, 100 and 200m freestyle.

McEvoy, the Pan Pac gold medallist over 100m, swam tonight’s one-lap dash in 22.33 – without taking a breath, to hold off Andrew Abood (Marion, SA) in 22.82 and 100 and 200m butterfly champion, David Morgan (TSS Aquatics) third in 22.86.

Will Stockwell, the 20-year-old son of 1984 Olympic silver medallist Mark Stockwell and two-time Olympic gold medallist Tracy Caulkins, finished fourth in 22.92.

Stockwell trains under two-time Australian Coach of the Year, Simon Cusack, the man who has guided the Campbell sisters to world championship gold.

McEvoy has all three races in his sights at next year’s Australian Championships and Olympic Trials from April 7-14.

He could well hold the key to Australia’s men’s relay hopes in all three relays – the 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle relays and the 4x100m medley relay.
