COWDREY GRABS FANTASTIC FOURTH GOLD WITH 50 METRE WORLD RECORD
Beijing, September 15: South Australian swimming sensation, Matthew Cowdrey continues to amaze in the Watercube with the 19-year-old tonight netting his fourth gold of these Games and seventh medal in China with another world record performance in the S9 50 metre freestyle.
Australia's most famous and fastest arm amputee, Cowdrey came into the Games as one of the athletes most likely to star in the pool and he hasn't disappointed taking his fourth victory in a new world best time of 25.34, to again relegate China's, Guo Zhi (25.51) to second place.
With one day of competition remaining, Cowdrey will be aiming for a fitting final when he takes to the water with his fellow Aussies in the medley relay tomorrow while tonight the green and gold also celebrated further podium triumphs.
Sydney's, Peter Leek joined team mate Cowdrey with his seventh medal when he grabbed his fourth silver of the Games in the S8 50 metre freestyle in a time of 26.89.
Leek was beaten to the wall by 0.44 of a second by China's Wang Xiaofu (26.45) while Russian, Konstantin Lisenkov (27.18) rounded out the podium placegetters.
In the women's events, Marayke Jonkers grabbed her first medal of the meet with a silver in the SM4 150 metres individual medley stopping the clock in 3:28.88 with Denmark's, Karina Lauridsen blitzing the field for gold with a world record of 2:47.84.
In other events, Jacqueline Freney grabbed her third bronze medal of the Games in the S8 50 metres freestyle with a swim of 32.37 while fellow ‘bronzed Aussie', Katrina Lewis (29.13) claimed her first medal of the Games when she finished third in the S10 one lap event.
