Swimming Australia, May 22 2016: Rio-bound freestyle sprint stars Cate Campbell and Cam McEvoy wrapped up their Japan Open assault in Tokyo tonight with one lap sizzlers.

First up Campbell showed why she is regarded as one of Australia’s most exciting prospects for this year’s Olympics, touching the wall first in the 50m freestyle dash in 24.31 seconds, ahead teenage training partner Shayna Jack (25.02).

It came after Campbell’s brilliant 100m time last night when she equalled her Australian Championship winning time and the number one time in the world this year of 52.38.

(There was no Bronte Campbell in tonight’s final with Japan Open rules allowing only two visitors in the A finals and Jack out-touched world champion Bronte in this morning’s heats).

Next up was McEvoy, who had already won the 200m in a nail-biter with  Japanese “Rising Son” Kousuke Hagino on night one and last night’s 100m freestyle shoot-out with team mate and two-time world champion James Magnussen.

And “The Professor” was right on song tonight, producing another world class time of 21.61 to out-class Japan’s Katsumi Nakamura (22.26) with Magnussen third in 22.31 in the men’s 50m freestyle final.

It was also a memorable night for Queensland sisters Olympian Taylor McKeown and 15-year-old Kaylee McKeown who were both on the podium – Taylor third in the 200m breaststroke in 2:23.87 and Kaylee second in the 50m backstroke in 28.27.

While Nunawading’s Josh Beaver, who will partner world champion Mitch Larkin in the backstroke events in Rio, capped an outstanding meet, touching the wall first in the 50 metres backstroke in 25.01.
