2017 Phillips 66 US National Swimming Championships: Juy 1, 2017:

Notes

The high point award winners for the 2017 Phillips 66 National Championships were Leah Smith with 91 points and Caeleb Dressel with 90 points, respectively
Katie Ledecky was presented the Phillips 66 Performance Award for her victory in the 400m freestyle.
Five U.S. Open records and two American records were set this week in Indianapolis.
Katie Ledecky and Chase Kalisz clinched the overall arena Pro Swim Series titles with 68 and 65 points, respectively. Kalisz claims a one-year lease of a BMW and a $10,000 series bonus for his efforts. As the top female professional swimmer in the arena Pro Swim Series Standings, Melanie Margalis also picks up a one-year BMW lease.

Smith wins her second national title to qualify for a fourth individual event on the world championships roster. Smith also won the 400m IM and was second in the 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle events.
Katie Ledecky (Bethesda, Md./Stanford Swimming) will also swim this event at the world championships.
Smith’s time is the second-fastest in the world this year, behind Ledecky’s 15:35.65.

Women’s 200m Individual Medley
1. Melanie Margalis (Clearwater, Fla./St. Petersburg Aquatics), 2:09.57
2. Madisyn Cox (Lubbock, Texas/Longhorn Aquatics), 2:09.69
3. Ella Eastin (Irvine, Calif./Stanford Swimming), 2:10.89

Race Notes

Margalis wins her second national title in this event to qualify for an individual spot on the world championships roster. She also made the team in the 800m freestyle relay.
Margalis is now ranked third in the world this year, while Cox’s time follows as the fourth fastest.

Men’s 200m Individual Medley

Kalisz wins his fifth national title, and first in this event, to sweep the individual medley events in Indianapolis.
Kalisz’s time is fastest in the world this year and a personal best.
DeVine is the third-fastest performer this year; his time was a personal record by nearly 2 seconds.

Manuel wins her fourth national title and third in this event to add this event to her world championships schedule. She was second in the 100m freestyle earlier in the meet.
Weitzel qualified for the world championships roster with her runner-up finish.
Manuel’s time makes her the third-fastest performer in the world this year.

Simone Manuel: “I think that I was able to take a little bit of pressure off myself … I obviously have very high expectations on how I should perform, but in that 50 free I walked out on deck and had a better sense of calm and was more relaxed. I was happy with that swim, and pretty surprised with a 24.2 based on how I’ve been feeling in the water. I think with a little more rest I’ll definitely be able to go faster.”

Dressel’s time is the third fastest in the world this year.

Caeleb Dressel: “It feels good, especially with good company. There’s a lot of really fast guys in that heat. I just have to work on my last 25m in the next few weeks. We’ll look over the schedule and figure out what we need to do to represent USA the best I can. If your focus is set on one race at a time, all of your energy is going to go into that one race – that’s what really helps me … moving along and going with the flow.”
