Aussies hoping for final night delight at Duna Arena

The finals will commence at 01:30 AEST and will be broadcast LIVE AND EXCLUSIVE on the Seven Network on 7TWO (please check your local guides for details).

The last night of racing at the Duna Arena for the 2017 FINA World Championships will see the Australian Dolphins Swim Team test their sprint, distance and relay skills in the women’s 50m freestyle, the men’s 1500m free and the women’s 4x100m medley relay finals.

First up will be defending champion from the 50m freestyle Bronte Campbell, with the title anyone’s for the taking.

Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom is the favourite after breaking the world record in the semi-finals (23.67), but there is less than a second separating the top eight swimmers.

Olympic gold medallist and world championship silver medallist from the 400m freestyle Mack Horton will swim from lane one in the 1500m freestyle final and will be looking to clock a time close to his best (14:39.54) to be in the mix for another medal tonight.

Horton will face tough competition from the Italians with Olympic champion Gregorio Paltrinieri swimming from lane five and his teammate Gabriele Detti – who won the 800m freestyle earlier in the meet, from lane three.

Keep an eye on Horton at the 600m mark, where he usually starts to make his move and pick up the pace.

Finally, the women’s 4x100m medley relay team will take on the last event on the program after the heats team of Holly Barratt (backstroke 59.68), Jessica Hansen (breaststroke 1:07.10), Brianna Throssell (butterfly 58.52) and Shayna Jack (freestyle 53.54) successfully progressed through in fifth place with a time of 3:58.74.

Expect a refreshed team tonight, looking to move up the ranks and onto the podium.

Women’s 400m Individual Medley

After setting a world junior record in the 200m backstroke just last night, Kaylee McKeown was back in the water this morning for the women’s 400m individual medley.

Despite the quick turn-around, the 16-year-old still managed to set a new personal best time in the event this morning with a 4:43.61 to rank her 16^th overall.

McKeown, who was swimming at her first ever major international meet, had a stellar week that saw her win bronze as part of the mixed medley relay heat team, and finish fourth overall in the women’s 200m backstroke, just a touch off a place on the podium.

The fastest qualifier for the 400m individual medley final tonight is local favourite Katinka Hosszu in 4:33.90.

Men’s 400m Individual Medley

Pulling on the gold cap one last time in Budapest, rookie Clyde Lewis gave the men’s 400m individual medley a crack, clocking a time of 4:20.34 to miss a spot in the finals and wrap up his first world championship campaign.

Lewis knocked time off both his 200m free and 200m individual medley bests this week and will leave Budapest with a wealth of experience and excitement for what the future holds.

The fastest qualifier was Chase Kalisz in 4:09.79 from the USA.

Men’s 4x100m medley relay

The Aussie men’s 4x100m medley relay will miss a final swim tonight after finishing ninth overall with a time of 3:33.91.

The team of Mitch Larkin (54.23), Matt Wilson (1:00.21), Dave Morgan (51.56) and Cameron McEvoy (47.91) couldn’t quite catch up after a slow start, with the USA the top qualifier in 3:29.66.
