Ariarne Titmus joins swimming’s legends with the 200-400-800m freestyle treble

 

  

Swimming Australia: March 2, 2018:  Ariarne Titmus has swum her way into swimming’s history books – becoming the first swimmer in 14 years and only the sixth Australian ever to take out the 200, 400 and 800 metres freestyle treble on night three of the Hancock Prospecting Australian Swimming Trials at the Optus Aquatic Centre on the Gold Coast.

The 17-year-old from St Peters Western added the 800m crown tonight in 8:20.08 - a personal best time and the second fastest time ever by an Australian – with only dual Olympian and tonight’s silver medallist Jessica Ashwood (Chandler) ever having swum faster in 2016.

Titmus joins swimming’s royalty: Linda MacKenzie (2004), Janelle Elford (1988), Anna McVann (1984), Tracey Wickham (1979 and 1982) and Karen Moras (1970) as the next to win the 200-400-800 treble, with Jannelle’s daughter Lani Pallister finishing fourth in the event tonight in a time of 8:36.91, showing promising potential for the future.

Titmus’ goal tonight was to break 8:20 and swimming through the 600m mark she was right on schedule – holding 1:03s until dropping off slightly through 700 metres before picking up the pace in the final 100 metres.

And although happy with her third win in three days, she wants to swim faster at the Games – which spells danger for the rest of the Commonwealth.

“I’m really happy I’m on the team now and I get to do those three swims (200m free, 400m free, 800m free). I worked hard for this, so I’m pretty happy,” said Titmus.

“I suppose I was pretty close to the (Australian) record (8:18.40), I thought I’d be a bit closer tonight.

“I obviously have some things to work on leading into the Games, so it’s something I can look forward to.

“I was probably aiming for the 8:18 mark. It was a good swim, but I want to go faster. So hopefully I can do that at the Games.”

And in another successful night for the passionate Dean Boxall and Maxine Seear coached St Peters Western squad, Olympic silver medallist Mitch Larkin showed why he will again be a force to be reckoned with at his second Commonwealth Games – winning the 200m backstroke in 1:56.60 and then finishing second (in 1:59.01) to team mate Clyde Lewis (1:58.36) in the 200m individual medley in a tough turn around.

And in the closest finish of the night 16-year-old Kaylee McKeown (USC Spartans) out-touched two-time world champion in the 200m backstroke Emily Seebohm (Brisbane Grammar) by the narrowest of margins 2:08.23 to 2:08.24 – with Melbourne Vicentre pair Hayley Baker (2:08.66) and Sian Whittaker (2:09.98) all clocking close-up B times.

In other events:

Emma McKeon (Griffith) added her fourth individual race for the Games – winning the 100m butterfly in an A qualifying time of 57.13 ahead of fellow Olympian Brianna Throssell (UWSC) 57.42 – both A time with Olympic silver medallist over 200m Madeline Groves (Griffith) third in a B time of 58.45.

 

Leiston Pickett (Southport Olympic) won her sixth national title in the 50m breaststroke in a B qualifying time of 30.60 to give herself a chance of winning a third consecutive Commonwealth Games title, while;

 

Rio Olympic silver medallist in the relay Jake Packard (USC Spartans) added the 50m to the 100m breaststroke in 27.33, just outside his personal best time of 27.29 swum in the morning heat.

 

Blair Evans (UWSC) motored home to win the 200IM in 2:12.81 to put herself in the game as did David Morgan (TSS Aquatic) and his B time of 52.32 to win the men’s 100m butterfly and;

 

Para sport winners were Tim Disken (PLC) in the 100m breaststroke (SB8) in 1:12.39; Paige Leonhardt (Chandler) in the 10m breaststroke SB9 in 1:18.67 and Liam Schulter (Kawana Waters) 200mfreestyle for S14s in 1:56.69.
