Dolphins secure the fast lane for tonight’s Para Pan Pacs finals

 

Swimming Australia: August 12, 2018: The Australian Dolphins swim team continued to dominate at the Pan Pacific Para Swimming Championships in Cairns this morning, securing lane four for a host of finals tonight, led by S14 swimmers Daniel Fox and Taylor Corry.

Backing up from a gold medal and personal best time in the women’s 200m IM last night, Corry was the quickest of the S14 100m backstroke swimmers this morning, even after the excitement of her gold.

Clearly emotional at the end of the 200m IM final last night, 23-year-old Corry dedicated the swim to her late Pop Colin who passed away before the meet and said it was hard to concentrate on backing up this morning.

 

“Last night I was really happy and lucky enough to get under two minutes forty,” said Corry.

 

“I was really happy because I did it for my Pop who passed away four weeks ago, so I did it for him.”

 

Corry was the best of the S14 women hitting the wall in 1.12.56 with fellow Australian Jaime-Lee Getson a second behind in 1.13.26 suggesting tonight’s final should be a close one.

 

In the men’s S14 class, 200m freestyler and dual Paralympian Daniel Fox showed strong form in the 100m backstroke to finish in a strong time of 1.03.62 and head to the final as the fastest of the Aussies. 

 

His second fastest swim ever in the event, having gone 1.03.35 at the Rio Paralympics, Fox said he was happy with the swim and will be keen to go quicker tonight when he takes on Takuya Tsugawa from Japan and Lawrence Sapp from Team USA.

 

“That felt good so we’ll see what happens tonight,” said Fox.

 

“Backstroke is just another stroke for me to flush out the system and normally I like to do backstroke first, so that when it comes to the 200m freestyle I’m all relaxed, so I’m not really used to doing it this far into the program, but otherwise yeah.”

 

“Hopefully I can go a little bit quicker tonight.”

 

In the S13 class both Jacob Templeton and 16-year-old Katja Dedekind will swim for gold for Australia, both going through as the fastest qualifiers in their respective 100m backstroke heats, while S9 legend Ellie Cole will swim for gold in the same event.

 

The women’s S10 100m backstroke will again be a field of class with Sophie Pascoe from New Zealand leading the way ahead of Aurelie Rivard from Canada and Dolphins Katherine Downie and Monique Murphy.

 

The men’s 50m butterfly S7 will see Rohan Bright and Matthew Levy start as favourites for the Dolphins, qualifying in 32.65 and 32.74 seconds respectively, with Team USA swimmer Evan Austin the best of the field finishing in 29.38.
