Dolphins into eight of the 10 finals on the last night of Pan Pacs

 

Swimming Australia: August 12, 2018: Australia will be represented in eight of the 10 finals when the last night of the 2018 Pan Pacs wraps up in the pool in Tokyo tonight.

The Dolphins have won 19 medals – six of them gold – and they’ll be looking to add to that tally.

Cate Campbell, Emma McKeon, Emily Seebohm and Mitch Larkin will all have busy nights – Campbell and McKeon in the 50m freestyle final before backing up for the 4x100m medley relay; Seebohm and Larkin in the 200m backstroke finals and their respective 4x100m medley relays.

 

Campbell and McKeon have already won three gold medals each with McKeon also winning a bronze in the 100m butterfly.

 

McKeon was the surprise packet of the morning heats – finishing second to Campbell in the final heat of the 50m freestyle – Campbell winning in 24.41 and McKeon touching second and second overall in a big pb of 24.47.

 

World titles bronze medallist Simone Manuel of the United States was third fastest.

 

Campbell said the Australians were determined to sweep all three of the women's relays in Tokyo with a medley win.

 

"We are going to do our very best, don't you worry about that," she laughed.

 

Campbell again showed blistering speed on Sunday backing up from Australia's latest relay victory in the women's 4x100m freestyle.

 

"To back up last night was really exciting. To be a part of that team again is a real honour and privilege," she said.

 

In the women's 200m backstroke, two-time world champion over the distance, Seebohm was fifth fastest for the final after 16-year-old American Regan Smith topped qualifying – Seebohm clocking 2:09.26 to teen star Kaylee McKeown’s 2:09.27.

 

Ex-dual world champion Larkin was sixth quickest for the men's 200m backstroke final after Olympic champion Ryan Murphy was fastest in a new championship record (one minute, 54.07 seconds).

 

Other Aussies in finals action on Sunday are Mack Horton, Jack McLoughlin (800m freestyle), Matthew Wilson, Zac Stubblety-Cook (200m breaststroke), Kiah Melverton, Kareena Lee (1500m freestyle), Brad Woodward (200m backstroke) and the men's 4x100m medley relay team.

 

Lee, will have just one day’s rest before joining Chelsea Gubecka in the 10km Open water Marathon at Tateyama on Tuesday.
