The 22-year-old Sydney University Economics and Law student set the pool alight last night with a sizzling time of 22.50 seconds to establish a new world short course record in the 50 metres butterfly.

His time equated to 1039 FINA points which makes him the top performer in Sydney so far and gives him 45 points (25 points for the win and 20 points for the world record) - equal with Series leader Christian Sprenger.

It was the first world record in a seven-event Series which will see Jaukovic and a host of Australians, including current Series leaders Marieke Guehrer and Sprenger contest the next four meets in Singapore, Moscow, Stockholm and Berlin over the next month.

Jaukovic, coached by Steve Alderman at Sydney University, admitted he was "in cruise mode" this morning as he posted the fastest qualifying time in the heats of the 100m butterfly.

His NSWIS team mate Garth Kates, from the Grant Stoelwinder program clocked a personal best time of 51.89 - the eighth fastest time by an Australian is the second fastest qualifier with another NSWIS scholarship holder Mitchell Patterson third in 52.63.

Jaukovic had posted his best time - an Australian All-Comers record of 50.37 at last month's Telstra Australian Short Course Championships and will be looking to challenge Adam Pine's Commonwealth record of 50.09 in tonight's final.

Ian Crocker's world record of 49.07, set in New York in 2004, may well be a little beyond Jaukovic at this stage of his career but something he will have his long-term sights on.

In other events tonight:

ELEVEN-TIME World Cup winner in this year's Series Oussama Mellouli will contest another three finals, the 200 and 1500m freestyle and the 200m individual medley.

RISING star Ellen Fullerton will contest the 100 IM and 400 IM and 400m freestyle finals after her 200m freestyle win last night. Fullerton is the fastest qualifier in the 400m freestyle while Beijing Olympian Alicia Coutts has the fastest time in the 100IM with the 400IM a straight final.

SOUTH AFRICAN Katheryn Meakum will be chasing more golds to match her nine wins in the Series when she lines up in the 200IM, 200mkatheryn meakum 400 im heat photo delly carr sal.jpg breaststroke and 200m butterfly.
