BRISBANE GRAMMAR SCHOOL SERVICE FOR THE LATE JOHN CAREW

john carew headshot photo ascta.jpgA funeral service for one of Australian swimming's greatest coaches, the late John Carew, will be held in Brisbane this Saturday.

Carew died peacefully at his Brisbane home last Saturday aged 81 after a long illness.

The service will be held at the Centenary Room, Brisbane Grammar School, Gregory Terrace, November 15 at 10am.

A large gathering of the Australian swimming community, especially those who have graduated through the John Carew Swim School at Indooroopilly are expected to pay their last respects to the man who touched so many people with his amazing talents and engaging personality.

He is survived by his devoted wife Barbara, their three children Donna, John and David and their eight grandchildren.

Carew, who coached Olympic stars Kieren Perkins and Hayley Lewis, amongst a host of champions, was elevated to the title of Master Coach by the Australian Swimming Coaches and Teachers Association (ASCTA) and inducted into the Australian Sporting Hall of Fame, just last month.

ASCTA Queensland recently presented Carew with a special plaque barbara and john carew photo ascta.jpgcommemorating each of Kieren Perkins eight world records from his first world record in the 400 metres freestyle in Canberra in 1992 to his last - two world records in the one race - in the 1500m freestyle at the 1994 Commonwealth Games.

The Carew family also invite guests to join them for light refreshments at the Brisbane Grammar School to remember and honour one of Australia's greatest swim coaches and one of nature's gentlemen.- IAN HANSON.
