THOMPSON HAPPY WITH SWIMSUIT DECISIONS
May 20: Telstra Dolphins Head Coach Alan Thompson says everyone's focus should shift from swimsuits and back onto the athletes inside them following a meeting of FINA's commission in charge of swimwear approval in Lausanne, Switzerland.
This week's meeting was an attempt to clarify which suits are legal and which are not in the lead-up to the FINA World Championships in Rome from July 26 to August 2 this year.
Thompson sat on the commission that reviewed 348 swimsuits from 21 different manufacturers on Monday and Tuesday.
A total of 202 swimsuits were approved for use throughout the remainder of 2009 and 10 were rejected for not passing the tests of buoyancy and/or thickness.
The commission decided the remaining 136 needed modification to be in accordance with Dubai Charter rule 3.1 c), as they don't fulfill the requirement stating that "swimsuit material shall not be constructed to or include elements/systems which create air/water trapping effects during use".
The manufacturers of these suits, which have not been named, now have a maximum of 30 days (until June 19) to modify their suits and resubmit them for approval.
Thompson said he is happy with the results of the meeting.
"I've said all along that when an athlete swims well we want people to be talking about the swimmer, and not the suit, and this is a big step in that direction," he said from Lausanne.
"We have to get back to giving credit to the athletes.
"It's now clear exactly which suits have been approved for Rome in July and for the rest of the year. There are still some suits that may be added to this list going forward, but for that to happen, they will have to be modified and then approved by FINA in accordance with the Dubai Charter rule 3.1 c)."
Manufacturers of approved suits will have to make them available to all swimmers for the World Championships.
It is unclear yet if any members of the Telstra Dolphins team for the World Championships will be affected by the decisions in Lausanne.
While Thompson said no swimmers in the world would have any issues with the 10 swimsuits that were rejected, members of the Australian team have two weeks to apply to wear swimsuits other than those supplied by Swimming Australia sponsor Speedo.
Speedo's full range of suits, including the Speedo LZR Racer as worn by Eamon Sullivan, Libby Trickett and Stephanie Rice during their world record swims in 2008, was included on the approved list.
No decision has yet been made about the validity of unofficial world record swims in suits that have not been approved.
These pending records include the 200m backstroke time of 1:52.86 set by Ryosuke Irie of Japan at the Duel in the Pool meet against the Telstra Dolphins in Canberra earlier this month and the 50m and 100m freestyle bests set by Frenchmen Frederick Bousquet (50m - 20.94) and Alain Bernard (100m - 46.94).
If the times of the two Frenchmen are not ratified, Sullivan will retain his world records in both freestyle sprints.
Thompson said the swimwear commission had no say in the ratification of world records but pointed out that suits used by those swimmers would have to be different if they were to be approved for use.
He said the commission had worked within the new rules about swimsuits to get the best result.
"The playing field is as level as possible right now, certain more level than it has been," he said.
