OCEANIA CHAMPIONSHIPS DAY 2: AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND SHARE POOL HONOURS

oceania swimming.jpgJune 23, Apia, Samoa: Australia and New Zealand have shared the gold medal honours after the first of four days of competition at the 8th Oceania Swimming Championships.

The Dolphins and the Kiwis each won four gold medals with the Australians adding seven silver and four bronze to New Zealand's two silver and three bronze, Papua New Guinea one gold with Hawaii and Tonga each taking a bronze. In an exciting opening night's highlights at the superb Tuanaimato Aquatic Centre:

  • Australia's Amelia Evatt-Davey (2:01.21) showed she is well and truly on the comeback trial after illness with an l-r meagen nay and amelia evatt-davey hawaii 2007 photo hmg.jpgencouraging win in the 200m freestyle in 2:01.21 - one of four gold medals to the Dolphins.
  • Kiwi World Championship representative Andrew McMillan won double gold in the 200m freestyle (1:50.74) and the 200m butterfly (2:00.02) to lead the New Zealand gold medal rush.
  • Papua-New Guinea's Australian-based 2008 Olympic finalist Ryan Pini (24.64) had to pull out all-stops to beat rising Aussie rookie James Roberts (24.98) in the 50m butterfly with Tonga's Amini Fonua taking bronze (25.02).

It was Tonga's first international swimming medal since Tonga officially became a FINA member. Auckland-born Fonua was a 2008-09 Freshman at Texas A&M.

  • Australia's Jenni O'Neil (South Australia) clocked  a pb of 1:02.47 to win a thrilling 100m backstroke from New Zealand pair Jessie Blundell (North Shore) in 1:02.67 and Sophia Bachelor (Aqua Gym, Christchurch ).
  • Dylan Dunlop-Barrett (NZL) rook the honours in the 1500m freestyle in 15:43.02 from Australia's Matthew Terry (15:45.04) with Australia's Codie Grimsey (16:03.16)
  • With other gold medals going to Samantha Lee (NZL) 27.69 in the 50m butterfly; Madeline Grove (AUS) 2:12.49 in the 200m butterfly and Braiden Camm (AUS) 56.37 in the 100m backstroke.
