RECORD BREAKING REBECCA HAS FAMOUS NAMESAKE IN HER SIGHTS

Mackay's rising Australian breaststroke star Rebecca Kemp has already lowered former world record holder Jade Edmistone's colours at the 8th Oceania Swimming Champion ships in Apia - now she's after the scalp of famous namesake Rebecca Brown. Ian Hanson - the official Oceania correspondent for the FINA Aquatics Magazine.

Kemp broke Edmistone's 2004 Championship record in the 100m breaststroke with a personal best time of 1:08.86 - whichjade edmistone with plaque.jpg sees her ranked 23rd in the world this year.

It was one of nine gold medals to the dominant Dolphins team who swept to nine gold, four silver and one bronze medal; New Zealand one gold, six silver and two bronze Hawaii four bronze and Tonga., New Caledonia and Guam one bronze medal each.

But it was Kemp who produced the swim of the night - taking more than a second off the time set by one of Australia's most celebrated sprint breaststrokers.

(Edmistone won the 2005 FINA World Championship in Montreal and the 2006 FINA World Short Course championship - both in the 50m breaststroke.)

The Pat Wright coached 18-year-old now has the oldest Oceania record in the books in her sights - the 1983 mark set by 2000 Olympian and another former world record holder and former world short course champion, Rebecca Brown.

Brown's mark of 2:28.24, set in Noumea 17 years ago, has stood the test of time - but on her day Kemp could well add Brown's name to her list of records - in fact she has already swum faster than Brown's time.

rebecca brown fox sports interview.jpgThe youngster, out of the same Pat Wright-coached camp as 2008 Olympic gold medallist Linda MacKenzie and Olympic bronze medallist Nick Ffrost, is set to follow her fellow Far North Queensland swim stars into the fast lane.

Last year at the World School Games Gymnasiade in Doha, Qatar, Kemp stunned herself and coach Wright with an amazing personal best time of 2:26.55 to set a new Games record.

It is the eighth fastest time ever by an Australian - joining Leisel Jones (2:20.54), Brown (2:24.76), Sam Riley and Sally Foster (2.24.81), Sarah Katsoulis (2:25.35), Brooke Hanson (2:25.95) and Tessa Wallace (2:26.03).

Wright said at the time: "To swim that time is simply amazing. There's only a couple of people in Australia swimming that sort of time."

Kemp's mother Ann said: "Pat said she was hoping Rebecca could swim 2.28 or high 2.27s so to swim 2.26 is unreal."

The 200m breaststroke will be swum on the final day of the pool events on Sunday (Australian time).

Meanwhile fellow Queenslander Mitch Larkin set the only other meet record with an all-the-way win in the men's 400m individual medley, clocking a time of 4:22.17 - just under two seconds outside his own personal best of 4:20.48.

But it was quick enough to earn Larkin a new record - under the 2002 time set by 2004 Athens Olympian Adam Lucas.

In other highlights:

  • Australia's Braiden Camm added his second gold medal of the meet in the 50m backstroke in 26.47; Amelia Evatt-Davey her second gold in the 100m freestyle in 56.16; Whitney Ireland the women's 50m backstroke title in 29.70; Luke Kerswell the men's 100m freestyle in 50.64 and Tiffany Papaemanouil the women's 400 IM in 4:56.19.
  • Australia also won the men's and women's 800 metres freestyle relays - the women (Tiffany Papaemanouil, Amelia Evatt-Davey, Jade Neilsen and Amy Smith) in 8:18.58 and the men (Luke Kerswell, Jarrod Killey, Mitch Larkin and Matthew Terry) in 7:28.61.
  • The only other gold medal of the night went to New Zealand's Nick Ferrif who won the men's 100m breaststroke in 1:02.79 ahead of Australia's Jeremy Meyer (1:03.37), who only just out-touched Tonga's Amini Fonua who won his second bronze of the meet in 1:03.49.
  • Hawaii collected four bronze medals in the women's 800m freestyle relay; Kasey Johnston in the men's 400m IM, Summer Harrison in the women's 400IM and Darren Choi collecting his second bronze medal in the 50m backstroke.
  • Guam's Pilar Shimizu won her country's first bronze medal behind Rebecca Kemp and New Zealand's Grace Francis in the women's 100m breaststroke and;
  • New Caledonia collected their first bronze behind Australia and New Zealand in the women's 800m freestyle relay.
