OCEANIA CHAMPIONSHIPS: REBECCA KEMP BREAKS REBECCA BROWN'S 17-YEAR-OLD RECORD IN SAMOA

Posted in Swimming

rebecca kemp photo courtesy daily mercury mackay.jpgJune 28:Australia has unearthed a new swim star in 18-year-old Rebecca Kemp from Mackay who will return home from the 8th Oceania Swimming Championships in Samoa today with four gold medals and three Championship records.

In a stunning performance on the final night of the week-long Championships at the Tuanaimato Aquatic Centre in Apia, Kemp smashed former world record holder Rebecca Brown's 17-year-old meet record in the 200 metres breaststroke. Ian Hanson - the official Oceania correspondent for the FINA Aquatics Magazine.

Kemp stopped the clock in 2 mins 26.63 secs - the 15th fastest time in the world this year and 1.61 secs under Brown's 1993 mark set at the inaugural Oceania Championships in Noumea.

Although just outside her best time of 2:26.55 set at the World School Games in Doha last December it maintains her status as the eighth fastest ever Australian and would have seen her finish third in this year's Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific Championship Trials in Sydney.

It was far and away the "Swim of the Meet" as the Australians swept to 32 gold, 26 silver and eight bronze medals ahead of New Zealand eight gold, 15 silver and 13 bronze, New Guinea two gold and one bronze, Hawaii 11 bronze, New Caledonia one silver and eight bronze and Guam one bronze.

Earlier in the meet Kemp broke former 50m breaststroke world record holder Jade Edmistone's meet record with a time of tuanaimato aquatic centre apia photo oceania swimming.jpg1:08.86 before claiming the gold medal in the 50 metres breaststroke in 32.30.

She then combined with Jenni O'Neil (backstroke), 14-year-old sensation Madeline Groves (butterfly) and Amelia Evatt-Davey (freestyle) to establish a new Championship record in the 4x100m medley relay with a time of 4:08.92.

It took 0.22 secs off the 2008 record set by the Australian team of Bridgette-Rose Taylor, Jessica Legge, Amy Smith, Olivia Halicek.

Australia's Jeremy Meyer also added his name into the Oceania record books when he lowered Glenn Snyders 2008 mark of 2:16.24 to 2:15.27 in the men's 200m breaststroke.

In all there were five Oceania records broken in what organizers have described as one of the most successful Oceania Championships since the first meet in Noumea in 1993.

The meet also saw Tonga compete for the first time with the country's New Zealand-born, US-based visitor Fonua Amini competing as a visitor.

Amini, who is a college swimmer with the University of Texas A&M and to be eligible to swim for Tonga had to have lived in Tonga for 12 months.

Oceania president Dennis Miller said: "Fonua Amini was here as a visitor as under FINA Rules he had to have lived in Tonga for 12 months and Tonga was only affiliated to FINA in January this year. He was allowed to swim as a visitor and make finals but not medal." Ian Hanson.

* Under Oceania rules countries can only claim the first two medals.

** Fonua Amini swam as a visitor due to FINA ineligibility which states athletes must have 12 months residence, so he was unable to claim medals.
