SCHAFER MAKES HISTORY IN POOL

AOC, August 17: Nicholas Schafer made history at the pool tonight winning Australia's first gold medal at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in the 100m breaststroke.

"It was a proud moment," he said. "One that I will never forget."

Having qualified fastest in the event all the way through the competition Nick came from behind to win in the time of 1:01.38 seconds.

"It was fantastic to see my family and friends in the stands cheering me on. Looking up and seeing them was awesome."

 The 18-year-old from Brisbane, put in a gutsy effort in the last 25 metres to edge out Anton Lobanov from Russia and win by 0.06 of a second.

The women's 4x100m medley relay finished in second place but also took home gold when China was disqualified.

Emily Selig produced a stunning performance in the breaststroke leg. With long, graceful strokes, the 17-year-old came from third position to touch first and give Zoe Johnson a leading edge.

Emma McKeon backed up from her 100m freestyle semi final just one hour before to finish the race in second position with a time of 4:09.68.

Kenneth To added to the medal collection taking home silver in the 200m individual medley. Turning into the final leg in second place, To could not match the strength of Chad Le Clos of South Africa. The 18-year-old finished with a time of 2:02.51 seconds.

"I was really pleased with my performance," To said. "I knew Chad and Dylan were my main competitors coming into the race and that Chad would be strong in the freestyle."

Earlier in the evening, sixteen-year-old Emma McKeon maintained her form in the 100m freestyle winning her semi final and qualifying for the final with the fastest time of 55.64 seconds.

To backed up from the final of 200m individual medley to finish fourth in the faster semi final of the 100m butterfly. He qualified for the final in fifth place with a time of 54.36 seconds.
