fina logo 1.jpgOctober 18: Former Cairns-based Melbourne Vicentre rising star Kotuku Ngawati has shared in Australia's gold medal haul with Commonwealth Games gold medallist Kyle Richardson and Rachel Goh at the FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup 2010, held in Singapore (SIN).

Ngawati, 16, who shook the life out of Emily Seebohm in the 200IM at the Australian Championships in July to qualify for the FINA World Short Course Championships in Dubai in December, won the 100m freestyle in a personal best of 53.55.

The youngster, who is now under experienced Olympic team coach Ian Pope, edged out the experienced Marieke Guehrer (53.60) to move into sixth on the Australian all-time top ten.

She has emerged as another "live one" in National Head Coach Leigh Nugent's plans to take on the power of the US and Great Britain over the next two years.

Ngawati will spend the up-coming season converting her obvious short course talent into long course as Nugent builds his team on the recent Commonwealth Games gold rush for the 2012 London Olympics.

Richardson, a member of the gold medal winning Australian 4x100m freestyle relay team in Delhi, won the 100m in a time of 47.40 and was third in the 200m.

Richardson (22.65) overtook South Africans Graeme Moore (22.38) and Lyndon Ferns (22.51) on the second 50 with Moore second in 47.47 and Ferns third in 47.68, 0.2sec ahead of Sweden's veteran Olympic 100m butterfly gold medallist from Sydney, Lars Frolander.

Goh won the 50m backstroke in an impressive personal best of 26.64, touching out Australian record holder and World Cup star Guehrer, who was also third in the 50m freestyle. Goh was also second in the 100m backstroke.

Brazil's Thiago Pereira was the most successful swimmer in Singapore, winning four events - the men's 200m butterfly and the three medleys (100m, 200m and 400m) events - the best performer of the meet for the third time in the Series following his performances in Rio de Janeiro and Beijing. He enforces his lead in the overall ranking of the competition.

Pereira's best performance was again achieved in the 200m individual medley, this time in 1:53.45 (950 FINA points) - although he clocked a better time in Rio with his 1:52.72.

Pereira took the 200m 'fly in 1:53.90 ahead of Australia's two-time Olympian Travis Nederpelt (1:55.00) -  0.04sec ahead of Canada's three-time Olympian and 400IM winner Brian Johns.

Brazil won two more gold medals, thanks to Lucas Kanieski (1500m free in 14:45.65) and Guilherme Guido (100m back in 51.16).

South Africa won four titles, two for Commonwealth Games star Cameron van der Burgh and one each for Darian Townsend, now the runner-up in the overall ranking, and veteran Roland Schoeman).

Among other countries with gold medallists were Germany, Switzerland, USA, Russia and Japan.

The US dominated the women with seven victories - among them, three for Julia Smit in the medley events - the 200IM in 2:08.14 ahead of Australia's rising star Ngawati (2:09.27) who was also second in the 100IM in a personal best of 1:00.36.

Smit is ranked second in the overall classification, behind Therese Alshammar (SWE), who was the best performer in Singapore (100m fly in 56.32 - 933 FINA points).

By winning the 50m free in 23.98, Hinkelien Schreuder (NED) is now in the top-3 of the overall rankings.
