TRIATHLON, July 18, 2012: Triathlon Queensland has today announced a major new partnership with internationally renowned motor company Nissan that delivers for the first time sponsorship of the Triathlon Queensland State Series.

Acknowledging it as a major boost for the sport in Queensland, Tony Compier, CEO of Triathlon Queensland said: “To have an internationally recognised brand in the Nissan motor company come on board with Triathlon Queensland is a major coup, not only for the organisation but the sport in general. For Nissan to see a real benefit in partnering with us gives us great confidence that the direction we are heading in as an organisation is right.”

A significant plank in the partnership arrangement is the establishment of the ‘Triathlon Queensland Club Championships’ across a four race series incorporating the Duathlon, Aquathlon, Sprint and Olympic distances delivered by Triathlon Queensland.

The winning club of the Club Championships will receive, courtesy of Nissan Australia, a Nissan X-Trail vehicle valued at approximately $30,000.

Entry will be open to all member affiliated bodies of Triathlon Queensland and this emphasis on a club-level competition was a key factor in encouraging Nissan to partner with Triathlon Queensland according to Marcel Lal, Business Development Manager Northern, at Nissan Australia: “The opportunity to engage with the grass-roots of triathlon in Queensland is something we are very excited about. Clubs form the back-bone of the sport. The opportunity to support clubs by providing a platform, upon which they can participate and compete across a series, is something we were very keen to be involved in.”

Triathlon is not entirely new to Nissan according to Jeff Bennett, State Manager Northern, Nissan Australia who is excited by the prospect of expanding Nissan’s involvement in the sport: “We already have a significant involvement in triathlon through the Nissan Corporate Triathlon Series. Partnering with Triathlon Queensland to deliver opportunities for clubs to grow participation, particularly in young people is tremendously exciting. A key platform of our brand is community engagement and we see a real synergy with Triathlon Queensland through the formation of the ‘Club Championships’ in delivering on this platform. ”

Triathlon Queensland, through its Junior Development Program pathway, has spawned the likes of London Olympian Emma Jackson and recognises the fact that clubs are where this whole process begins. Tony Compier added: “Providing triathletes who come from all walks of life with an incentive to join their local club and participate in such a competition is something Triathlon Queensland is passionate about. We are extremely grateful that Nissan Australia shares this passion and has agreed to partner with us in delivering on these key cornerstones for our membership.”

Stephen Moss, head coach at the QAS and coach of Emma Jackson said from their pre-Olympic training base in France: “Preparation is going really well for London and Emma is right on track for the games. It is easy to be narrow in focus at a time like this – to some extent you need to be. However, getting news such as this great partnership between Nissan and Triathlon Queensland is a welcome distraction and a fantastic boost to the sport back home. We never forget where we came from and the fact that organisations such as Triathlon Queensland, who have supported Emma over the years, are receiving support in a tough sponsorship market is great news for the sport.”
