RESCUE 2012, WORLD LIFE SAVING INTER-CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
He then declared he will dedicate the next four years of his life to making the Australian kayak team for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
“Kayaking isn’t as much fun as paddling in the surf, but it’s something I’ve got to do – I have to train for the next four years and try make that next Olympic team,” said Tame.
“Coming here and winning this world title against a field like this is pretty special when you stop and think about it and it sure sits nicely next to my two Aussie titles.”
Tame, who celebrated his birthday on Wednesday, blasted off the start in the choppy, millpond conditions and held on to beat a fast-finishing Cory Hill (Northcliffe) with former British paddler Dan Humble (Trigg Island, WA) third.
London Olympic K4 gold medallist Tate Smith (Northcliffe) finished fourth, South African champion Jasper Mocke (Fish Hoek) fifth with Ironman star Shannon Eckstein (Northcliffe) sixth.
The women’s single ski final saw Manly’s London 2012 Olympian Naomi Flood win her third world title in fine style, adding to her championships from 2008 and 2010.
“It was important to execute a good jump start and get off the beach as best I could and I think I did that ok and it was a matter of getting into my rhythm and doing my thing,” said Flood, who was driven by Kristyl Smith’s third straight World surf race title yesterday.
“I won the single ski in 2008 and 2010 and watching Kristyl yesterday made me determined to try and add my third title today. I knew the field was red hot with the likes of Lisa Carrington and Hannah Davis so I had to paddle well for the whole race.”
Flood was never headed in an impressive display of power-paddling to win comfortably from Coolangatta Gold champion Brodie Moir (North Burleigh) and the fast finishing Hannah Minogue (Bulli)
Then came 2008 Olympic bronze medallist Davis (Glenelg) and Northcliffe Ironwomen, yesterday’s surf race winner Kristyl Smith and Courtney Hancock, with Carrington, finishing 10th.
The Youth finals saw Warilla Barrack Point pair, Kirsty Higgison and Ben Carberry notch the double for the NSW South Coast and following in their parents sporting footsteps.
Higgison is the 19-year-old daughter of 1984 Los Angeles Olympic swimming silver medallist Karen Phillips and Carberry the son of former NRL player Michael Carberry who had a 10 year career with South Sydney and the Illawarra Steelers.
It was the most convincing paddle of the day by Higgison who paddled away from the Youth field to win by 50 metres from Danielle McMahon (Wanda) and Teisha Jenkins (Mooloolaba).
Carberry had a nervous wait before being declared the winner over NZ star Cory Taylor (Northcliffe) with Daniel Booth (Northcliffe) third.
In other finals today:
Australian captains Kristyl Smith and Shannon Eckstein kept Northcliffe’s title hopes alive with impressive wins in their respective board finals.
Smith staged a neck-and-neck run to the line to beat Coolangatta Gold winner Brodie Moir (North Burleigh) with Harriet Brown (Northcliffe) third, while in the men’s it was Eckstein who out paddled a class field to win the gold from Stuart McLachlan (Redhead) and Matt Poole (Mooloolaba).
Northcliffe are chasing down Italian club Rane Rosse Aqvasport who opened up a massive lead in the Pool Rescue events. The Gold Coast-based Australian champions are priming themselves for a massive final day in the water tomorrow
Terrigal trio Lauren Stone, Alicia Bain and Zoe Hall claimed a rare trifecta in the women’s Youth board final.
Redhead’s Ian Morgan sprinted across the bank to win the Men’s Youth final from Newport’s Max Brooks with Kurrawa’s Luke Cuff third.
South African Club Durban Surf claimed the Rescue-Tube Rescue title from Northcliffe A and Bronte while the women’s event saw Manly take the gold in a thriller from DLRG Halle-Saalekreis (GER) with Alcareno de Salaventeno (ESP) taking the bronze.
The two major surf boat finals went bto Batemans Bay in the Open and Mooloolaba i9n the open women with Bulli taking out the Under 19s while Australian champions Collaroy added the world championship to their list of titles, beating Kurrawa and Grange, while in the women it was Kurrawa ahead of Scarboro and Currumbin.
