Titans join Vikings to kick up their heels at Currumbin
Rugby League, November 28, 2012: Gold Coast Titans NRL stars Luke Bailey and Beau Champion will be special guests when the Currumbin Beach Vikings Surf Life Saving Club kick-starts its 2012-13 surf lifesaving season with the annual “Legs 11” Cocktail Party this Friday night.
A smash hit for the club’s 90th Anniversary in 2010, the Vikings decided to proceed with its successful theme in 2011, attracting over 350 people and it’s on again bigger and better in 2012 with the “Best Male Chest” of the Year now added to the “Best Female Legs” competition.
“We decided if you’ve got a good thing stick to it and the Legs 11 idea celebrates what has traditionally become a ‘girls night out’ with us blokes just making up the numbers,” said Vikings president Ben Munro, sticking his chest out.
“The Currumbin precinct has always been a close knit community with our surf lifesaving, surfing and sporting culture and we can think of no better way to kick-start our season than to kick up our heels.
“We are delighted to welcome the Titans boys Luke Bailey and Beau Champion and to work with the Titans to promote surf lifesaving on the Gold Coast.
“The Titans and Gold Coast Surf Clubs are now in their second year of working together and don’t be surprised if one of our boat sweeps lasoos some their players for our boat crews.
“We’ve also got a couple of our boys in the junior Titans ranks so it’s a good fit all round.”
One of the club’s champion beach sprinters, Miss Summer Surf Girl entrant, Tara Hawking joined the Titans players at the recent launch of the Gold Coast Surf Clubs Ambassador program, showing off the legs that will speed across the sand in the famous green and white quartered Vikings cap this summer.
Hawking recently won bronze with team mates Alee Whiteman, who was a c lose-up fourth in the world championship final, Hayley Atkins, back with the club after a stint with Anglesea and new recruit Kelly McDonnell from Kurrawa in the open beach relay at the World Championships in Adelaide.
“Some of the Titans boys probably didn’t realise just how fast Tara’s legs are,” said Munro.
“But the way our head beach sprint coach, former National and world champion, Brett Robinson is preparing our beach sprinters I think we are in for a great season.”
The Vikings boat crews have also had a winning start to the season, with Lyle Clark and his Barbarians winning the opening round of the Ocean Thunder Series in Sydney, with Matt Wildman’s crew finishing fifth in the final – to showcase the club’s boat strength.
Meanwhile leading Ironman Jackson Maynard, a silver medallist in the Under 19 Australian Ironman in 2010, has returned from a successful World Championship tilt, where he finished sixth in a red-hot Ironman field after top 10 finishes in the surf race and board race. He heads up an exciting group of board and ski paddlers who are looking to continue their climb up the ladder, which saw a host of State and Aussies medals last season.
