HAUSER AND HEDGELAND WIN SUPER SPRINT YOUTH CATEGORY

Triathlon, December 16, 2012: Queensland’s Matthew Hauser and Western Australia’s Kira Hedgeland have been crowned respective ITU Youth Super Sprint Race Weekend champions after two non-stop days of racing at the Sports Super Centre at Runaway Bay on the Gold Coast.
After six races Hauser, 15, had accumulated a total of 185 points from four wins and two second placings in a dominant display to take the win from fellow 15-year-old Queenslander Harry Sweeney (126 pts) and NSW’s 14-year-old Caleb Agostino-Morrow (106.75).
The girls event saw 15-year-old Hedgeland (164 pts) nail the final event for double points to beat Queensland’s 15-year-old Jessica Corliss (147.50) with Victoria’s Hayley Stanford (107pts) third.
TODAY will see the ITU Junior titles decided with the A finals due to start at 11.30am (women) and 12.15pm (men).
After the first six races Tasmania’s Jacob Birtwhistle has been the dominant force in the men – winning the last four races to hold a commanding lead (156 pts) over Matt Baker (NSW) 114.25 and Luke Willian (QLD) 79.75pts.
Queensland trio Anna Coldham (123.5), Jodie Duff (121.5) and Holly Grice (115.25) head the top 16 women.
Places on the Australian team for next month’s Australian Youth Olympic Festival awaits four men and four women from the Youth fields – with the top three gaining automatic selection and the fourth places to be named at the discretion of the TA Elite Selection Committee.
