Record Numbers For Australian Youth Triathlon Championships
Triathlon Australia, March 14, 2013: Triathlon Australia has received a record number of entries for this year’s Australian Youth Triathlon Championships on the Sunshine Coast next week.
The Novotel Twins Waters Resort will again play host to the second AYTC across three age divisions 13-14 years, 15-16 years and 17-18 years.
The individual entries have topped 153 – an increase of 50 athletes on the initial year in 2012 with Monday, March 18 set down to host the individual races and Tuesday March 19 for the Mixed Teams Relays.
Among the leading 17-18 year-olds will be Queensland pair Luke Willian and Christian Wilson, who both represented Australia in this year’s Australian Youth Olympics in Sydney with Willian taking the silver behind Jacob Birtwhistle.
Willian finished second and Wilson fourth in this year’s Scody Australian Junior Series.
The 15-16 years will see Queensland’s Matthew Hauser and Western Australia’s Kira Hedgeland line up after their respective ITU Youth Super Sprint Race Weekend wins on the Gold Coast last December.
They were crowned the inaugural age champions after two non-stop days of racing at the Sports Super Centre at Runaway Bay.
After six races Hauser, 15, had accumulated a total of 185 points from four wins and two second placings in a dominant display to take the win from fellow 15-year-old Queenslander Harry Sweeney (126 pts) who will line up again.
The girls event saw 15-year-old Hedgeland (164 pts), younger sister of AYOF Champion Jaz Hedgeland nail the final event for double points to beat Queensland’s 15-year-old Jessica Corliss (147.50) and these two will also take to the Twin Waters course again.
Triathlon Australia’s National Manager for Athlete Development, Craig Redman is excited about the future prospects.
“To receive an increase of 50 entries on our first year is very encouraging,” said Redman.
“Australia has an abundance of talent and these events give our young athletes and their coaches something to target, races to prepare for and that’s what we want.
“We need these kids to get as much race exposure as possible and this is a perfect follow on from the ITU Youth Super Sprint Weekend.
“I think we are going to see some very exciting racing indeed as they go about honing their skill sets.”
