Triathlon Australia, October 11, 2013: Just one month after the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final in London five of Australia’s leading female triathletes will wind up their international seasons at the penultimate round of the 2013 World Cup circuit in Tongyeong,  South Korea tomorrow (Saturday, 10am AEDST).

London Olympian Emma Jackson will lead the young Wollongong-Vitoria group of recently crowned ITU World Under 23 world champion Charlotte McShane and her training partners Natalie Van Coevorden, Tamsyn Moana-Veale and Grace Musgrove around the testing Tongyeong course.

Jackson finished a creditable sixth in the World Championship grand final race which saw dual Olympian Emma Moffatt earn an early Commonwealth Games nomination to the ACGA with her bronze medal finish.

She will be determined to finish the season on a high note before the domestic season starts in two weeks with the Nepean (October 26, 27)and Noosa (November 2, 3) events to kick-start the Australian summer season.

But Jackson will have every reason to be looking over her shoulder at Jamie Turner’s group, led by Under 23 queen McShane who will again be ably supported by her bridesmaids Van Coevorden, Moana-Veale and Musgrove.

McShane is looking forward to getting back on her bike after her stunning victory in London which saw her hit the final 100 metres of blue carpet towards the finish line and she never looked back as she stormed away to take the win ahead of Canadian pair Ellen Pennock and Amelie Kretz.

Moana-Veale finished eighth, Musgrove 12th andVan Coevorden 14th in an eye-catching show of strength from Australia’s next generation.

“I’m really looking forward to Tongyeong. After London, I had a week off and I relaxed a little and visited family and friends in Scotland before heading back to our base in Vitoria,” McShane said.

“Since then, I have been back training as normal to prepare for my last few races and once I’m back in Australia, I will turn my focus to both Nepean and Noosa, and I'm excited to do something a bit different. I've never raced Noosa before, so can't wait to have a crack.”

Van Coevorden said the time off was good to refresh and get ready for Tongyeong.

“We have had a few solid weeks of training leading into this race and I am excited,” said Van Coevorden.

“I wanted to keep mentally and physically fit for this race to end my season on a high. There is something special about here that I like.

“It's hilly and challenging and I can't wait to take it on for my second year now before I head home for the Nepean race.”

Musgrove said she too was looking forward to racing Tongyeong, after making her World Cup debut there last year.

“I'm looking to see how I have improved and developed as an athlete in the past year but I am definitely looking forward to getting back to Australia after five months away,” said Musgrove.

"I am racing the Yarrawonga Triathlon the first weekend I'm home then I will have some time away from triathlon to freshen up for 2014.”

Moana Veale said she appreciated the return to  Vitoria where the atmosphere was quieter than before the frantic lead up to London.

“It's been good to train with just the core group and I’m looking forward to racing and learning from some of the mistakes I made last year before returning home to race in Nepean,” said Moana-Veale.

  • The Tongyeong course will offer up a challenging 1.5km two lap ocean swim, followed by 40km on the bike with two steep hills on each of the five laps, and will finish up with a four lap 10km run.
