In the Youth categories it is NSW pair Caleb Agostino-Morrow and Laura May who go into their final day ahead on points.

The three-day event at the Sports Super Centre, Runaway Bay, continues today with the Super Sprint and Ultra Sprint Triathlons and concludes tomorrow morning with the Junior Super Sprint Grand Final.

Hedgeland, under new National Talent Academy coach Dan Atkins has amassed a total of 50 points after the pool swim, 6km bike criterium and 1000m track run and holds a narrow two lead over fellow World Championship team member, Brisbane’s Sophie Malowiecki (48) and fellow Queenslander Jessica Horton (44pts).

The 19-year-old Hedgeland, who was fourth in this year’s ITU Junior World Championship, finished seventh in the combined 50, 100 and 200m swims; won the bike criterium and finished second to Malowiecki in the run.

Hedgeland’s 16-year-old sister Kira, who won the inaugural Youth category last year is sitting in seventh on 33 points – racing consistently to finish fifth in the swim, fourth on the bike and seventh in the run.

Blake, 19, was outstanding in the pool clocking 25.8 in the 50m sprint; 56.4 in the 100m and 2:04.9 for his 200m freestyle for a combined time of 3:27.0 – two seconds clear of WA’s Gabriel Cipriano.

The 6km criterium bike, made up of three laps of the Runaway Bay course and a run to transition and a run out of transition saw Blake finish fifth behind fellow Victorian Ben Anderson, Queensland’s Calvin Quirk and NSW’s Elliott Collins who all clocked the same times.

Third place behind World Championship team member Luke Willian and last year’s Youth winner and NTA athlete Matthew Hauser in the 1000m run saw Blake finish day one on 50 points, well ahead of Collins (33pts) with Quirk and Queensland’s Max Neumann next, locked on 30pts.

In the Youth events Agostino-Morrow has opened up a commanding lead with 65 points, 23 clear of Queensland pair Braelan Renton (42pts) and Jace Grant (41pts) while May (46pts)  holds a narrow lead over WA pair Lili Rogers (41pts) and Jessica Claxton (38pts).
