Triathlon Australia, March 2, 2014: Meanwhile Perth’s triathlon sister act Jaz and Kira Hedgeland continued their climb up the triathlon family tree after taking out their second consecutive quinella in six days in the Scody Australian Junior Triathlon Series in Devonport yesterday in an eye-catching 1-2 finish to the OTU Junior Oceania Championship.
Last Sunday the sisters Jaz, 19 and Kira 15 from Willetton, stormed to their first ever quinella at the Australian Junior Championships at Brighton Beach in Victoria and yesterday they added gold and silver again – this time in the OTU Oceania Championships, with the cream of the New Zealanders joining Australia’s best.
In between they went back to Perth under WA’s National Talent Academy coach Dan Atkins and flew back on Friday – showing no ill effects of their tiring travel routines as they continued to climb up the triathlon ladder.
Jaz, fourth in the ITU World Championships in London last year, has sewn up the overall Scody National Championship pointscore and automatic selection for this year’s ITU Championships in Edmonton, Canada and it now looks highly likely that sister Kira could well join her big sister on the Australian team.
They are quickly following the pathway that saw the birth of Britain’s Brownlee brothers Alistair and Jonathan who have gone on to conquer the Olympics and ITU World Championships – to carve their brand as the most dominant in Olympic distance racing.
Defending Australian champion Jaz showed why she will challenge for this year’s ITU World Championship podium with another impressive all-round performance in Devonport to run away with the gold medal to re-inforce her as Australia’s number one junior triathlete.
But as in their daily training routines, little sister Kira keeps big sister Jaz honest in every session they do under the direction of the wily Atkins.
Jaz Hedgeland said it was flattering to be mentioned in the same breath as the Brownlee brothers.
“Great Britain has the Brownlees and we’ve always looked up to them and now Australian triathlon has the Hedgeland sisters, so that’s pretty cool,” said older sister Jaz.
“I’m really happy to win the Oceania Championship and even more happy for my sister Kira to come through and finish second, it’s amazing that we can both be successful in the same sport.”
