Triathlon Australia, March 2, 2014: The Junior Men’s Oceania crown went to 15-year-old Queenslander Matt Hauser in his first year in the Junior ranks.
He produced a stunning 5km run leg to win the gold medal with the silver awarded to New Zealand’s Taylor Reid and the bronze to Queenslander Matt Roberts.
The winner of the Youth Olympic Trial in January had to work his way through the field and admitted his Cross Country background helped him a lot.
“I wished I could have been up further in the swim, I got knocked around a bit, which is often the case,” said Hauser, who also wrapped up the Scody Australian Junior Series.
“The boys helped me really well on the bike and we worked as hard as we could to try and catch the front boys.
“And thank goodness the run is paying off for me at the moment which is really great.
“Coming from a Cross Country background really helps.
“But it’s a dream to come out in my first year and win this race and win the Series. To mix it up with the big boys and come out with the win is a real confidence booster.”
In a disappointing end to his day, Wagga’s Caleb Noble, who crossed the line second, was disqualified after failing to serve a penalty.
