AUSSIE FOURSOME HOLD ON TO BEAT KIWIS IN MIXED TEAMS RELAY
Triathlon Australia, January 12, 2015: Australia’s star studded juniors upset defending champions New Zealand to take out the prestigious Oceania Teams Junior Relay in Penrith yesterday
The team of Matt Hauser, Calvin Quirk, Kira Hedgeland and Dimi Coventry each completed the 400m swim, 5km bike and 1.5km run in a helter-skelter battle with the defending champions in driving rain.
It capped a great weekend’s racing following Saturday’s Oceania Junior Championships and yesterday’s Oceania Paralympic Championships.
The final leg saw Quirk the ITU World Championship junior bronze medallist go head-to-head with Kiwi star Daniel Hoy, the Nanjing Youth Olympic silver medallist.
And it was Quirk who took over from Saturday’s individual Oceania champion Hedgeland, who held on to out-last the dogged Hoy to ensure the Australian victory, with the Kiwi boy clocking a faster time by two seconds.
Coventry, now training under Triathlon Australia Performance coach Dan Atkins on the Gold Coast, started out the day for Australia, holding Lizzy Stannard (NZL) at bay before Saturday’s men’s Oceania junior champion, Matt Hauser.
Hauser had a ding-dong duel with Kiwi Flynn Thompson, with the pair clocking the two fastest times of the day, Hauser clocking 17:13 and Thompson 17:16.
In the end it was Australia (1:13.21) to won the gold from New Zealand (1:13:49) with the Victorian team of Hayley Stamford, Luke Burns, Matilda Vidler and Kurt McDonald producing a brilliant performance to finish third in 1:14:34.
In other results: Claire McLean won the PT4 for women in 1:20.04 from Kate Doughty (1:22.29); Casey Hyde (1:28.34) the women’s PT5 Elite while Jonathan Goerlach (1:11.44) won the PT5 Elite for men from Daniel Searle (1:19.43).
