Sam Shepherd & Olympian Ellen Gandy ready to let it Rip
The Rip, March 31, 2015: It is touted as arguably Australia’s most dangerous ocean swim and this Saturday noted Australian surf and open water swimmer Sam Shepherd and British Olympian Ellen Gandy will lead a group of swimmers across Melbourne’s Port Phillip Heads for the 2015 Rip Race.
“The Rip” is a fast moving body of water at the entrance to Port Phillip. It is widely recognized as one of the most treacherous stretches of water in the world.
The race will begin at Point Nepean and will finish at Point Lonsdale, with the winner expected to reach the finish in well under an hour.
The 3.5km Easter Saturday Rip Race, with 37 swimmers, will begin with a deep water start at 9:30am with organisers timing the start to coincide with the slack and then incoming tide.
