October 28: Rugby Gold Coast and the Gold Coast International 7's are delighted to announce Hyperion Asset Management as its naming rights sponsor for this year's inaugural tournament.

The Hyperion Gold Coast International 7's will be played at Albert Park, Surfers Paradise on Saturday and Sunday November 7 and 8.

It has attracted 16 men's teams and four women's teams who will showcase the latest addition to the 2016 Olympic program in Rio de Janeiro.

Dr Manny Pohl, Managing Director and Investment Committee Chairman said Hyperion was delighted to support the Gold Coast International 7's. 

"We like the similarity between a tight-knit team of seven rugby players at peak fitness working as one to play world-class rugby and Hyperion's tight-knit team of investment professionals aiming to deliver world-class investment performance for our clients," Dr Pohl said.

Gold Coast International 7's Tournament director Luca Liussi welcomed the announcement and the huge boost it has given the two-day event.

"We have a very exciting product and so does Hyperion - and there is no doubt that the future looks bright for both of us," said Liussi.

"To showcase the Olympic family's latest addition on the Gold Coast will add further excitement to a sport which has certainly been the hot topic of conversation recently, especially since the IOC announcement in Copenhagen two weeks ago.

"Hyperion will add a further touch of class to a tournament which will only grow from strength to strength in the build up to the IRB World Cup Series and next year's Commonwealth Games and then of course Rio.

"Rugby in Rio has a nice ring to it and for us to have so many great teams, great players in action and the support from Hyperion so soon after the Olympic announcement can only augur well for the advancement of our tournament in years to come."

Some of the biggest names in the rugby world will be part of the tournament with:

• The Aussie Spirit team to be coached by dual international Michael O'Connor.
• Fijian 7's legend Waisale Serevi,  the Director of 7's Rugby in Papua New Guinea, spearheading the exciting PNG team and;
• Wallabies legend Mark Ella to coach the Samoan Virgin Blue Islanders which includes IRB Rugby Sevens highest pointscorer Ben Gollings while former Australian 7s player Josh Fuimoana will line up with the Gold Coast Breakers.
  

SAMOAN VIRGIN BLUE ISLANDERS TO PLAY FOR TSUNAMI VICTIMS

While competition will be fierce, one team in particular has a very personal reason to win the tournament - The Samoan Virgin Blue Islanders, made up of first class players from Samoa and Fiji, will be winging their way to Australia to compete with thanks to sponsor Virgin Blue.

Not only do they hope to win the cash tournament prize of $20,000, which will be donated to people of Samoa who have lost their families and home in the recent disaster, through their attendance they hope to raise further awareness and funds for the rebuilding of their island home.

The team will include Gold Coast-based English international Ben Gollings, the highest pointscorer in IRB Rugby Sevens history, with over 2000 points.

Gollings, who has been sidelined with a back injury is happy to be back playing.

"Thanks to Virgin Blue we have been able to put together the Samoan Virgin Blue Islanders team to be coached by Australian rugby legend Mark Ella," Gollings said.

"We will be playing for the people of Samoa and any prizemoney we win will be donated to the fighting fund to help the victims of the recent tsunami.

"All the boys will be playing their hardest in memory of those people who lost their lives in the tragedy and all the families who have lost loved ones and their homes.

"It will be a great weekend for rugby and a weekend we can dedicate to the people of Samoa."
