LAWRENCE CRUNCHED IN BRUISING SEVENS TACKLE
Rugby Sevens, November 13: New Zealand Rugby Sevens star Zar Lawrence is likely to miss the remainder of the Hyperion Gold Coast International Sevens tournament after a crunching tackle has left him with a badly bruised shoulder.
Lawrence, the long-standing 27-year-old from the Bay of Plenty, looked certain to score in the corner in the first half of the Emerging New Zealand's Pool B match against Brisbane's Nadroga Navosa.
But he was slammed into the corner post in a thumping tackle by Joshua Kerevi and landed on the point of his left shoulder.
Lawrence lay motionless until the New Zealand physiotherapist arrived to place his arm in a make-shift sling and the 2009 tough-as-teak New Zealand Sevens Player of the Year staggered from the field for treatment.
Emerging New Zealand ran out 33-5 winners - to maintain their unbeaten start, after earlier securing wins over Lloyd McDermott (26-10) and Sunnybank (41-5) head pool B.
Lawrence, who was left out of New Zealand's gold medal winning Commonwealth Games squad, was using this tournament to push for selection in New Zealand's squad for the opening IRB World Series tournament in Dubai in early December.
