GIANT KILLING TARANAKI SET SOUTH SEA BOYS ADRIFT
Rugby Sevens, November 13: New Zealand's Olex Taranaki Academy has continued its barnstorming run through day one of the Hyperion Gold Coast International Sevens with a last gasp 12-7 win over defending champions South Sea Island Drifters from Fiji.
The young Academy team, led around the park by Hurricanes Super Rugby star and player-coach Scott Waldrom, broke a 7-6 deadlock when captain Cody Rei raced down the right hand touchline for his second try of the game to break the deadlock in the dying seconds.
But it was the Drifters who only minutes earlier had the chance to win the match after Malakai Kuribau had raced away after chasing through a kick down field, only to knock the ball on as he was about to touch down under the posts.
Rei, who played the last 10 minutes in New Zealand's under 20 World Championship win against England last year, has been one of the real stars of this year's tournaments - scoring four tries and kicking eight conversions in the first three games.
He and Hurricanes most recent Super Rugby recruit, snappy fly-half Beauden Barrett, have been the standouts for the brilliant Taranaki youngsters.
