MOOLOOLABA DOMINATES OC6 NATIONALS POINTSCORE

open men oc6 gold mooloolaba photo harvpix.com.jpgOUTRIGGER CANOE, May 16: Host club Mooloolaba has wrapped up the Australian Outrigger Canoe Racing Association (AOCRA) 2011 National OC6 Championship pointscores after a successful two-day event in perfect Sunshine Coast conditions, which attracted crews from all over Australia.

Mooloolaba, who took out the prestigious open men's 22 kilometre title on Saturday, won the senior pointscore and doubled up to win the junior title at the conclusion of yesterday's racing.

In the seniors it was Mooloolaba Outrigger Canoe Club on 159 points from Brisbane Outrigger (103) and Outrigger Australia (Currumbin) 102.

The junior division saw Mooloolaba on 73 points take the title from Outrigger Australia (48) and North Queensland club, Canoe Point Outriggers (36).

Of the major titles it was Mooloolaba who not only won the open men's long course with a stirring display to take the gold over Outrigger Australia and NSW State Champions Cronulla but the club also won gold in the:

  • Senior Masters Men (22km) and Senior Masters Women's 18km titles;
  • 19 and under (16km);
  • Senior Masters Men (16km) and;
  • 16 years and under (10km)

The Outrigger club took home their fair share of spoils and were also first home in the 10km short course event with their Young Guns crew steered by Peter Dorries; the women's open 18km, the open 16km and the 14 years and under 5km.

Coffs Harbour, with Mike Mills-Thom at the helm also had a successful weekend winning the Masters Men (22km) and (16km); the Masters women (18km) and the 12 years and under (3km).

Other gold medals over the weekend went to:

  • Northcliffe (Golden  Masters) 18km
  • Cronulla (Senior Masters) 10km
  • Noosa (Masters Women) 10km
  • Brisbane OCC (Novice Women) 10km
  • Brisbane River Dragons (Open women) 10km
  • Port Hacking (Novice Men) 10km
  • Cradle Coast-Tasmania (Open Men) 10km
  • Port Macquarie (Open Mixed) 10km
  • Burleigh Point (Golden Masters Men) 22km and;
  • Noosa Outrigger Club (Platinum Masters Men) 22km

The next major events on the AOCRA race calendar will be the Gold Coast Cup (hosted by Northcliffe) on May 28; the Great Barrier Reef Ocean Challenge (hosted by Cairns) on May 29 and the Hamilton Island National Changeover Titles from June 16-19.
