October 27, 2011: In a major coup for South Australian surf lifesavers, two of Australia’s most celebrated stars of Surf Sports, Shannon Eckstein and Elizabeth Pluimers will headline a two-day “Brighton Dolphin Training Weekend” at Adelaide’s Brighton Surf Life Saving Club this Saturday and Sunday.

Eckstein is not only the four-time and reigning Australian Ironman Champion but also the three-time defending World Ironman Champion who wants to defend his title in Adelaide next November while Pluimers has won 19 Australian gold medals and is the current and two-time Australian open women’s board champion who also has her sights set on Rescue 2012.

The pair will be joined by the Gold Coast’s noted surf sports competitor-turned-coach Dan Norton Smith who has coached a myriad of State and National champions over the past decade including Nippers, Age Group competitors, Open age athletes and Masters in a variety of disciplines.

The Training Weekend is the brain child of Brighton SLSC’s Youth Development Officer Richard Crowe and has attracted 65 budding Surf Sports Stars from Brighton and nine other SA clubs, keen to learn from the best of the best.

The weekend will also co-incide with the countdown to the “One Year To Go” milestone for Rescue 2012 on November 7 – Surf Life Saving’s World Championships which will attract thousands of surf lifesavers to Adelaide from around the globe from November 7 to 18, 2012.

Eckstein, who captained the victorious Australian team to the World National Teams Championship title in Egypt in 2010, has revealed Rescue 2012 in Adelaide could well be his swansong on the international stage.

“If I am lucky enough to be selected in the Australian team for my third World Titles, it may well be my farewell to international competition – I don’t know whether I’ll be around for 2014,” said Eckstein.

“So I am excited about the possibility of again leading Australia next November in Adelaide – it will be a great climax to the year that’s for sure.”

Eckstein is equally excited to be able to pass on his knowledge to the next generation of Ironmen and Ironwomen in South Australia and particularly at the Brighton Club – SA’s 2010-11 Club of the Year.

“It’s a great opportunity to teach the kids a few tricks of the trade and help them prepare themselves for the up-coming season,” said Eckstein.

“South Australia has a wonderful history in surf sports and one of our current coaches at Northcliffe, Gavin Hill, is a legend in SA and his son Cory is also following in his dad’s footsteps.

“I know there will be a lot of enthusiasm on Brighton Beach this weekend and Liz and Dan and I can’t wait to hit the surf – it should be a lot of fun.”
