JUST ONE POINT SEPARATES TOP CLUBS
March 9, 2012: Powerhouse clubs Maroochydore and Northcliffe are neck and neck after day one of Surf Life
Saving Queensland's Junior State Championships at Maroochydore today.
Home beach advantage helped Maroochydore to a one-point lead over Northcliffe in the club pointscore after a day of exciting competition in excellent conditions.
Maroochydore finished the day on 91 points, Northcliffe were on 90 and they have a good advantage over third-placed Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park on 57 points.
The top two clubs were separated by only two points at last year's Queensland Junior Championships - with Northcliffe victorious - and today's results indicate it could easily be just as close again in 2012.
With almost 1500 competitors starting their three-day carnival, the host club won the most day-one events, securing five gold medals, while Northcliffe's results were dominated by its under-13 boys who made a
clean sweep of the four events decided yesterday.
Bailey Armstrong and Toby Redler led the way for Northcliffe, each winning four gold medals as they
combined to take out the board rescue and joined with Ethan Shield and Jedd Percival to win the Cameron relay, Harrison Crouch to win the board relay and Kobe Schulz and Mitchell Coombes in the winning surf team.
Maroochydore's winning teams were in the U11 female board relay (Mackenzie Brazier, Summer Short, Tiarnee Massie), U13 female Cameron relay (Chloe Travers, Ellen Masters, Isobel McGinness, Tara Patrick), U14 female board relay (Cassie Lee, Chelsea Gubecka, Laura Pettigrew), U14 male Cameron relay (Aaron Penfold, Matthew Barclay, Mitchell Stark, Rhys Wolfendan) and U14 male board relay (Lachlan Masters, Matthew Barclay, Rhys Wolfendan).
For Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park, victories came in the U13 female board relay (Emily Gallagher, Madeleine Whatman, Sara O'Leary-Whitney), U12 female flags (Lauren Stevenson) and U11 male flags (Kieren Croker).
Not to be completely overshadowed by Maroochydore, Sunshine Coast clubs enjoyed plenty of success, with gold medals going to Sunshine Beach in the U11 female Cameron Relay (Electra Outram, Mikayla Barwicki, Olivia Emanuel, Talisa Brady) and U11 male board relay(Maverick Pettigrove, Thomas O'Connor, Zachery
Brewer); Dicky Beach in the U11 beach relay (Hannah Bradicich, Juliet McCreed, Kaylia Setchell, Perri Bright); Bribie Island in the U12 female beach relay (Alexandra Nicholson, Carly Banks Munnings, Ella
Parker, Taylor Stickler); and Mooloolaba in the U14 female Cameron relay (Elke Parker, Molly Bainbridge, Nicole Kay, Tara Reilly) and U11 Cameron relay (Dylan Bradford, Hayden Cotter, Kyle Aimer, Noah Smith).
Among the winners from the Gold Coast were the Kurrawa U14 male board rescue combination of Grant Harris and Lachlan Sergis, and the Tallebudgera U14 male surf team comprising Brayden McCarthy, Ethan Clouston, Harrison Hoy, Patrick MacPherson.
On the sand, Cole and Nash Geyer, the sons of ex-NRL player Matt Geyer, both won gold medals in their respective Currumbin relay teams. Nash combined with Connor Pegg, Ryan Suddes and Zane
Rowles in the U12s, while Cole's U11 team mates were Harrison Halliwell, Kane Pyers, Nate Searle.
Max Jones of Ayr is the toast of the North Queensland contingent at the championships after he won the U12 flags. In the female U11 flags, Laticia Josephson of Palm Beach was victorious.
