MASTERFUL MAYNARD'S GOLDEN DAY FOR CURRUMBIN AT CRAZY JOHN'S QUEENSLAND SURF CHAMPIONSHIPS

March 16, 2012: Ageless lifesavers Billy Ryan and Nev de Mestre can be excused if they put their feet up
tonight and toast yet another setting sun on a busy day's competition at the 2012 Crazy John's Queensland State Masters Surf Life Saving Championships at Kurrawa on the Gold Coast.

Ryan, wearing the red, white and blue of Coolangatta won gold in the one kilometre beach run while Australia's oldest competitive Ironman, de Mestre (North Burleigh) started his day out with a gold in the single ski - both in
the 70 years plus division.

Testing 1-1.5 metre waves greeted the Masters competitors who took to the start line with that same steely determination that drove our ANZACs to fight them on the beaches.

And so many of these super-fit lifesavers of yesteryear just kept backing up race after race, some like Currumbin's Gold Coast City Lifeguard Chris Maynard, pocketing gold medals at will.

Others were just happy to make up the numbers, several back in the swim after open heart surgery, cancer scares and numerous operations on shoulders, knees and toes - but all of them having fun with their mates.

Some of the names of the past like famed Ironmen Steve Pullen (Noosa Heads) and Barry Newman Northcliffe) and former Australian champions like Gavin Hill (Northcliffe), Craig Shelton (Surfers Paradise), Bruce and Noel Kolkka, Steve McBean and Steve Fry (Northcliffe), Brett Dowker, Steve and Benny Cahill  (Currumbin),
Martin Kenny (Mooloolaba), Tiarne Smith and Anna Ballara (Northcliffe) all still very competitive indeed.

In the end it was Northcliffe's overall strength that won the day and the pointscore on 331 points from Noosa
Heads (314), Mooloolaba (283),  Alexandra Headland (225), North Burleigh (219), Currumbin (199), Kurrawa (169), Surfers Paradise (152), Maroochydore (101), Burleigh Heads-Mowbray Park (98).

But individually it was Currumbin ski coach Maynard, whose talented son Jackson and daughter Riley will join their father in the open competition starting tomorrow, who stole the golden limelight in the first session - bagging four gold and a bronze in quick succession before adding to his haul later in the day to finish with six gold medals.

Maynard, one of the Gold Coast's most celebrated Lifeguards and one of the most accomplished of watermen, helped his beloved Vikings to gold in the 130 years Board relay, ski relay and Taplin Relay while snaring bronze behind close friend Jeff Lemarseny (Nth Burleigh) and fellow Viking Michael Waide in the 40-44 years single ski.

It was the combination of Maynard, Waide and Dowker that won the board relay; Maynard, Waide and another senior lifeguard and the club's Iron/board coach in Kelly Margetts that took out the ski relay while Maynard and Waide joined with a third lifeguard in Michael Chan to take the Taplin.

Maynard and Chan combined later in the day to win the 40-44 years board rescue in a Vikings quinella from Dowker and Waide with Dowker swapping partners to join Daniel Cowper for another gold in the 35-39 years double ski.

Individual gold came for Maynard in the board race which saw a Vikings quinella, ahead of his partner-on-podium Waide before the pair linked with master surfer Len Cook to win the Surf Teams.

Dowker added to his collection as well when he won gold in his age division in the board race ahead of the club's six-time Champion Patrol Team winner Steve Cahill.

Trying to match the Currumbin crew were the best Masters from Surfers Paradise, Noosa Heads, Maroochydore and Alexandra Headland.

There is certainly a revival going on under the famous Surfers Paradise tent with the scene now set for the return of Ironman King Trevor Hendy, very much a master at 43, but keeping his powder dry for the weekend's Open
competition, starting tomorrow and climaxing with Sunday's finals.

Hendy has entered 10 events, including the open ironman for the first time since the 2002 Queensland
titles but today it was the club's head coach Zayne Hamill who started the Surfers gold chase with victory in the 30-34 years beach run.

But it was in the 150  years age group that saw Surfers dominate with Craig Chapman and former Australian board relay gold medallist and Craig Shelton combine for victory in the board rescue.

Chapman then lined up with Rob Dorrough and Stuart Keay to win the 150 years plus ski relay while Keay joined Barry Aplin and Darryl Blackburn to win the 170 years Taplin relay and later Grant Kelly to win the 50-54 years board rescue.

The 150 years Taplin saw Northcliffe dominate with their head coach and former Ironman Barry Newman joined by Paul Davis and Coolangatta Gold original Steve McBean taking gold ahead of the Northcliffe second team of Bruce and Noel Kolkka and Stephen Fry.

Bruce Kolkka also teamed up with McBean to take out the 50-59 years board rescue.

Not to be outdone were the Northcliffe girls with former Ironwoman Anna Ballara and Queensland and Australian surfing champion Tiarne Smith leading the way.

Smith won the 30-34 years beach run and single ski  and combined with Ballara and Joanne Marrable to win the 110 years Taplin Relay while Noosa's Alison Olander won two gold in the single ski and double ski (with Jolie Simpson) and silver with Alison Pegg in the board rescue.
