NORTHCLIFFE CELEBRATE HALL OF FAME INDUCTION WITH 11TH AUSSIES PATROL CHAMPIONSHIP
March 26, 2012: Northcliffe has celebrated its induction into Surf life Saving's Hall of Fame with an unprecedented 11th successive Australian Open Patrol Team Championship on the Opening day of the Aussies at Kurrawa.
The Champion patrol team were inducted to join the movement's all-time greats after winning their 10th straight
Patrol title last year but just to put the icing on the cake they added another gold medal by the barest of margins.
Northcliffe's combination of Kathryn McKenzie, Nick Pluimers, Stuart Snell, Jake Nicholson, Damien Moffrey and Trent Rowe beat Alexandra Headlands (Brigette Seymour, Michael White, Bradley Doughan, David Bown, Jacob Doughan, Kate Thornton) by just 1.8 points.
Victorian champions Jan Juc (David Ulbrick, Leigh Lyan, William McCance, Dean Siebun, Stephen Iannazzo, Luke Van Neel) won bronze.
It stands as the greatest single winning streak in the history of the SLSA, coming after Northcliffe equaled Currumbin's Patrol Team's 10-year winning streak last year.
And two of the Northcliffe team members, captain Damien Moffrey and his erstwhile lieutenant Trent Rowe, have been in every winning team since 2002 at Kurrawa.
Moffrey, 40, took a leaf out of Geoff "Skippy" Huegill's book to lose 18.8kg since last season.
"I had actually retired last year after thinking, well 10 is a nice round number and I was ready to stand aside for our Australian under 19 Patrol Champion Riley McGregor," said Moffrey.
"But when he decided to stay up in Bundaberg and work as a lifeguard over Xmas it left a vacancy and the team talked me into starting again.
"But I knew I had to lose some weight."
Then the fun began for Moffrey, who convinced himself if he was to continue to match it with his younger team mates and his rivals then he had to get back and be thinner and fitter.
He started swimming training, employed a personal favour and began eating healthier.
The result: He lost 18.8kg and won his 11th Australian gold medal.
And in the overall result, all that hard training paid off for Moffrey in the swim teams section of Lifesaving's premier event.
Both Northcliffe and Alexandra Headlands dead-heated in the swim teams with the result based on a countback and the fourth swimmer's placing from each club.
It was Moffrey who edged in front of the Alexandra Headlands swimmer to ensure Northcliffe were awarded the winning points and eventually their 11th straight Australian title.
Sunday will see every member of all of the Northcliffe teams since 2002 inducted into the SLSA Hall of Fame - an honour bestowed on a squad of dedicated lifesavers who will go down in history as one of the greatest teams in history.
