MEDIA STATEMENT: 2012 AUSTRALIAN SURF LIFE SAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

March 29, 2012 - 8:15am: Australian Surf Life Saving Championships organisers can confirm that the full air, sea and beach search has resumed for missing competitor Matthew Barclay from Maroochydore SLSC at the 2012 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships at Kurrawa Beach.

The incident occurred in the under-15 area yesterday afternoon.

Surf Life Saving Australia's CEO, Brett Williamson OAM, said police, the Westpac Helicopter Rescue Service, the event's own safety officers and lifeguards are participating in the search, which resumed at approximately 5:00am (AEST) this morning.

"At this time, we are not able to provide further information on the incident, however, I can confirm that the search has resumed at Kurrawa.

"All Championship events have been suspended until further notice.

"Our priority is supporting the family, friends and broader surf lifesaving family.

"I will be making further statements as soon as I am able," he said.

Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) is co-operating with all authorities and will release further details as they become available.
