JACKSON MAYNARD’S MEMORABLE PADDLE IN MEMORY OF JACOB

AUSTRALIAN SURF LIFE SAVING, September 24, 2012: Currumbin Beach Vikings rising star Jackson Maynard reveled in the spectacular sunshine and superb surf to beat "a class field" that took to the waves at Yamba for the third Jacob Lollback Memorial Board Race Day on Saturday.

More than 1000 people were on hand to celebrate Lollback's life, which was tragically lost three years ago in a diving accident.

Yamba Surf Club stalwart and event organiser Jim Dougherty described the day as a great success.

"The whole day was brilliant," Dougherty said.

"The weather was good, the surf great and it ran as smooth as ever."

Dougherty praised the competitors, who came from as far as Noosa to the north and Warilla Barrack Pt to the south for the event.

"We had most of Australia's best paddlers here," Dougherty said.

"They were hotly contested races too, an absolute class field."

Maynard, a silver medallist in the under 19 Australian Ironman Championship in 2011, won the men's open 4km event, fighting his way through the field to cross ahead of KNG qualifier Chris Moors and noted Ironman and Australian representative Hugh Dougherty.

It is some consolation for the disappointment of missing the Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Series the weekend before but sets Maynard up for what will be another big season.

"The finish of the race was amazing," Jim Dougherty said.

"As they came in there were about five guys riding the same wave.

"It made for an exciting finish which the crowd were very appreciative of."

Maynard’s Vikings clubmate, Michael Chan made it a Vikings double when he beat Ironman legend Darren Mercer in the over 40s, with Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park’s Chris Walker third, while sister Riley Maynard celebrated her 18th birthday with a silver medal to Olivia Hall (Nth Burleigh) in the Under 19s as she prepares for the Coolangatta Gold on October 14.

The women's open 4km was won by 2011 Australian ironwoman champion Courtney Hancock. Harriet Brown finished second with Bonnie Hancock third.

Dougherty said members of the Lollback family attended the event and were very appreciative of the efforts that people put in.

"They enjoyed the whole day and were very thankful to the people that were there," he said.

The Dash for Cash, a 150m sprint, was won by national ironman competitor Hugh Dougherty.

"I think it was the most exciting part of the day for crowd," Jim Dougherty said.

"There were 15 guys riding the same wave and Hugh just got away from them at the end."
