OLYMPIC MASTERS OF THE SURF IN IT FOR FUN OF IT
Surf Life Saving Australia, March 28, 2014: Australian Surf Life Saving’s Masters of the surf will kick start the Aussies 2014 at Scarborough Beach tomorrow – the first of seven action-packed days featuring 5000 lifesavers from aged 15 to 70.
Names like Noosa Heads trio Grant Kenny, Darren Mercer and Geoff Dews, Deane Pieters (Trigg Island, WA), Scott Thompson (North Bondi, NSW), Gavin Hill (Northcliffe, QLD), Chris Gately (Coogee, NSW), Darren Scott (Maroubra, NSW), Paul Lemmon (Terrigal, NSW), Don Marsh (Carlton Park, TAS) and Paul Openshaw (Brighton, SA) have all left their legacies at Aussies all round Australia.
Tomorrow and Tuesday they will try and forget about their aches and pains and turn the clock back to have some fun with their mates.
Kenny showed at the recent Queensland Championships that he is having more fun than most, winning his first Queensland Ironman title since his heydays of 1984 and he will again line up in his favoured single ski in the Masters and the Opens, starting Wednesday.
The former four-time Ironman champion and 1984 Olympic bronze medallist will be joined by another Olympian in 1992 swim team member, one of WA’s favourite swimming sons in Pieters.
Pieters was virtually unbeatable in 1990 and 1991, steering Manly to a golden era – becoming the only competitor in history to win the open surf, open belt, surf teams and Taplin Relay gold in one year.
Day One of the Masters will see the individual events in surf, beach and craft with Day two featuring boats and teams events. Action starts from 8am-4pm
