slsa logo 2014Surf Life Saving Australia, April 17, 2015: IRONMAN legend Trevor Hendy teamed with his son TJ to produce a magical moment of pure emotion at the 2015 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships at North Kirra today.

The father and son combination came from last to first to win an Open Men’s Board Rescue final – a finish that thousands on the beach will remember forever.

It will go down in the annals of the Aussies as one of the most amazing moments in the 100 years of the sport being celebrated over the last week on the Gold Coast.

The Surfers Paradise father and son combination won a desperate sprint up the beach to edge out Manly’s Jay Furniss and James Stewart, with their clubmates Zac Orchard and Leon Zagel.

Hendy, 46, the winner of a record six Aussies Open Ironman championships, said sharing the extraordinary achievement with his 20-year-old son was better than any of his personal achievements.

“I can’t think of an ironman victory feeling better than that,” he said.

“That’s better than winning ironman races. To do that with your son is something that’s not possible, it shouldn’t be possible.”

It took Hendy’s overall Aussies gold medal total to 27 – and in an event he first won with Jon Cook in 1989 and again in 1990.

In a Surfers Paradise family affair, Hendy won the open board relay gold medals with Zac Orchard’s father Dave in 1991 and 1992.

Meanwhile in other events:

Australian open water star George O’Brien has kept the coveted Australian Open Surf race at Kurrawa after a wave shot him past race leaders Olympians Tom Fraser Holmes and 10 time-winner and two time Olympian Ky Hurst and Ironman king Shannon Eckstein.

Eckstein finished second and Fraser-Holmes edged past Hurst in a frantic photo finish.

The women’s open surf saw 2013 winner Georgia Miller add her second gold from Newport hold off Northcliffe pair Courtney Hancock and Rebecca Creedy.

Fifteen-minutes later Miller combined with team mate Lara Moses to take her second gold of the day in the under 19 board rescue.
