Best of the best in Aussies “State of Origin” battle at North Kirra

slsa logo 2014Surf Life Saving Australia, March 15, 2017: The battle for Australian Surf Life Saving supremacy will take on a real “State of Origin” feel when over 300 clubs from around the country converge onto the southern Gold Coast for the 2017 Aussies from March 25 to April 2.

Queensland clubs have held a balance of power over arch rivals NSW for over two decades as Surfers Paradise, Currumbin and Northcliffe led a Sunshine State charge to the coveted overall Australian Surf Life Saving Championship point scores.

The last NSW club to win the much sought after Champion Club title was Cronulla back in 1994 – the third of three consecutive wins to the Sutherland Shire club. Can the winning streak continue from league to surf this year?

At the official launch of the 2017 Aussies today at North Kirra Surf Club, Surf Life Saving Australia President Graham Ford – a staunch member of Sydney’s Bronte Surf Club said, ‘our theme for the Aussies this year is ‘Together for Life’ based around the celebration of the SLSA’s core purpose, to save and protect life. The Aussies is not just about us coming together at the event but the joy and reward we gain from competing together at what we do best. And we firmly believe we are going to see the very best of the best in action in the surf and on the beach.

There has always been healthy rivalry amongst our clubs and it’s this rivalry which has been the lifeblood of competition at the Aussies since our first Association Championships in 1915 at Bondi, over the next nine days, of competition.

We at the SLSA welcome our valued partners, the clubs, the competitors and their families as well as our amazing volunteer officials to North Kirra for what we believe will be one of the most hotly contested Australian Championships on record’, said Mr Ford.
