Cancellation of water-events at the Aussies 2017

slsa logo 2014Surf Life Saving Australia, March 31, 2017Stormwater run off that will close Gold Coast beaches over the weekend has forced organisers to cancel all water events for the remainder of this year’s Australian Surf Life Saving Championships at North Kirra.

Australian Championship Competition and SLSA Safety and Risk Committees were advised late today by local authorities that all waterways and estuaries will be closed for the next three days due to poor water quality.

Carnival committee chair Mike Martin said: “In reaching this decision we have looked at all options and we appreciate this is disappointing.

“But the safety and welfare of our competitors is first and foremost when making decisions of cancelling or postponing competition.

“In light of the information to hand we have decided that water competition (including boats) will be cancelled. Contingency venues are also compromised.”

The only Championship events to continue will be First Aid, Rescue & Resusitation (dry run through only), beach events and the March Past that will proceed on Sunday with a revised schedule to be distributed tomorrow (Saturday).

SLSA Safety and Emergency Management Co-ordinator Steve Leahy said: “There are strict risk management plans and processes in place and the conditions have been deemed to exceed our risk management tolerances.

“Members are advised that if they choose to enter the water, they do so at their own risk.

“We therefore recommend against any entry into the water.”
