FLOOD WINS QUEENSCLIFF IRON WOMAN IN KELLOGG'S WARM UP

naomi flood has big day taking out world ironwoman and ski titiles photo slsa.jpgSydney Northern Beaches, January 12: MANLY's world champion Ironwoman Naomi Flood has issued a stern warning to her Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Series opponents after a convincing performance at Queencliff's Open carnival on Saturday.

Flood and fellow Kellogg's Series contender, Collaroy's Kendrick Louis completed their preparations for this weekend's opening rounds of the Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Iron Man Series with impressive victories.

Flood, who will captain the Inner Health Plus NSW Northern Hammers when the $200,000 Series kicks off at Kurrawa next Saturday and Sunday, defeated Freshwater's emerging star Alisha Miller and Manly team mate Flo Epper in the Ironwoman.

Series debutant Louis, Flood's Hammers team mate, won the under 19 Ironman from Redhead's Michael Booth and his younger brother and Collaroy club mate, Bart Louis.

Series trialist Miller won the under 19 Ironwoman from Epper and open and under 19 surf race winner Tatum Lawler from North Bondi.

She has sounded a clear message to her rivals in this year's Series, saying: " My goal for the Kellogg's Nutri-Grain series is to finish in the top four in every race, it's a big call I know but I'm ready to show those girls how tough I am.

"I have had a great couple of weeks training and I'm feeling really confident about every leg of my iron woman race.

"I have worked really hard on gaining the edge by working on my weakest craft leg (the board) by doing specialised board training.

"Starting a gym program has already paid dividends and my strengths in the ski and swim have already improved."

Flood has never done gym before and has already noticed the changes in her body and the confidence it has given her, admitting she couldn't do a chin up and struggled with dips.

"I'm now bench pressing 65kg and can feel the difference lifting weights has made," says Flood.

"The gym training has given me a massive confidence booster and it will definitely help me over come the hurdle of believing in myself more."

Flood will again face the cream of Ironwomen in defending Series champion Elizabeth Pluimers, reigning Australian champion Alicia Marriott, nib Coolangatta Gold winner Hayley Bateup and the Hancock sisters Courtney and Bonnie - who will make up the second and third spots in the Hammers lineup.

Another KNG athlete, Express Glass Southern NSW Blue Fins representative, Chris Allum won the open surf race from Cronulla team mate Mark Simpson and Queenscliff's Tom Atkinson. Simpson also won the Ironman from Atkinson and Allum.

Atkinson completed a field day when he won the open board final from Redhead's Stewart McLachlan and Manly's Mitchell Roberts.

Manly's recent Epic Kayaks 20 Beaches Classic winner Murray Stewart showed why he is going to be competitive in this season's march towards the Australian Championships with a victory in the open single ski from Adam Rowe (Swansea Belmont) and Queenscliff evergreen Damien Daley.

Stewart also helped NSW State Championship winning club Manly to wins in the Taplin Relay and Ski Relay events.

Freshwater showed their strength in the women's craft events with Brooke Miller, Rachael Crerar and Kim Lowe filling the first three places in the open women's board, with the maroon and whites also winning the open board and ski relays.

While Freshwater are showing their depth in the craft area, Queenscliff continued to shine on the beach with current NSW Inter- Branch champion, the ever-present Laura Shorter spearheading the host club to another red-and-blue letter day on the sand.

Shorter was again unbeatable in her specialist open beach sprint and helped her team win the open beach relay, while team mate Jamie Lee Britt won the open and under 19 beach flags double and the under 19 beach sprint.

NSW Inter-Branch men's champion Michael Kember, competing for Collaroy, won  an all-Northern Beaches men's final from Marko Iljadica (North Steyne) and Steve Hatch from Newport.

The next major surf carnivals on the Sydney Northern Beaches will be conducted at Manly on January 24 and 25 and Freshwater on January 25 and 26.
