SMITH FAMILY MAKE EVERY POST A WINNER FOR AUSTRALIAN TEAM HONOURS
Freshwater, January 25: Northcliffe's brother and sister combination Kristyl and Nathan Smith can book their places on the Australian Surf Life Saving Team for the three-Test South African tour in March after impressive performances at today's Macquarie Sports Australia Day Surf Carnival at Freshwater.
Kristyl, the winner of the first two rounds of the Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Iron Man Series at Kurrawa last weekend, was in sizzling form today, winning the Ironwoman, board and single ski finals.
The Ironwoman saw Smith upset reigning Australian champion Alicia Marriott from City of Perth with the consistent Courtney Hancock, also from Northcliffe, third.
She proved too strong for Maroochydore's noted board paddler Allira Richardson, also competing for the High Performance Squad (HPS) with Terrigal's emerging star Amy Nurthen third.
In the ski final it was the powerful Smith who again proved too good for another Terrigal girl in Jenna Harrod with Mooloolaba's HPS member Gemma Newbiggin third.
The surf race went to Hancock from fellow HPS member Leonie Keen with Marriott third.
Smith, Marriott, Hancock and Manly's Naomi Flood, who won the open Ironwoman at her home carnival on Saturday, all look set to wear the green and gold against the South Africans in Durban, after the Australian Surf Championships in Scarborough in March.
Smith's brother Nathan, who had no luck at all at Manly on Saturday, chalked up a win in the open surf race over fellow HPS team member and last year's Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Series winner Zane Holmes with Ethan Whiteman from Swansea Belmont third.
He was also second to former Cronulla team mate Chris Allum in the open Ironman final with former Australian under 19 champion Jacob Lollback third.
The win for Allum capped off a great weekend for the reigning Australian open surf race champion, who won the Ironman and open surf races at Manly on Saturday.
Smith will join Holmes and Shannon Eckstein, who missed both carnivals with a "jammed facet joint" in his back, when Surf Life Saving Australia name the 12-person squad, made up of six men and six women, on Thursday week.
Apart from Allum, the selectors were also impressed with the form of Burleigh Heads' Lollback who also won the Manly-Freshwater board race double, from Tom Atkinson (Queenscliff) and Tim Foran (Redhead) and his team mate Hugh Dougherty.
WA's Brendan Sarson was able to walk off the beach today with his head held high after chalking up a popular victory in the men's single ski final over Northcliffe's former Australian champion Nick Crilly and Bulli's Downie Langthorne third.
