QUEENSLAND CYCLONES STORM HOME AT 2009 IRB INTERSTATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

irb takes flight photo harvie allison.jpgSunshine Coast, QLD, July 24: Queensland Cyclones stormed home to narrowly snatch victory at the 2009 Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Interstate Championships at Kawana Waters on the Sunshine Coast.

The best IRB crews from each state took to the surf today in a do-or-die shoot out.

The Cyclones in the end used their home ground turf to their advantage finishing on 46 points ahead of Victoria (43) and South Australia (34).

It was a thrilling day of racing, with strong winds providing close racing and plenty of excitement for the crowds.

Queensland Cyclones Captain Andy Kelckhoven (North Burleigh) said the introduction of the IRB Interstate Championships is a great concept.

"To race in a team with guys you usually compete against is a lot of fun and this is a great way to start the weekend of IRB racing," he said.

"I was surprised and honoured to be named captain of the Queensland team.

"I think there was an expectation that we would win today but that doesn't always mean you walk away with the title.

"I think the Queensland team did really well - the conditions were challenging, the chop was tough," said Kelckhoven.

Kelckhoven will now need to back up with his North Burleigh team mates when the Australian IRB Championships gets underway tomorrow.

North Burleigh are going for their fifth consecutive Australian IRB title, but will need to pull out some top racing to hold off 2009 Queensland IRB champions Kurrawa.

Record entries will take part in the Championships, with more than 680 competitors from around the country set to race in a bid for an Aussie medal.

The Australian Lifesaving are also facing tough competition at the World Games which are currently underway in Chinese Taipei - to check out the team's progress and results visit http://www.slsa.com.au/default.aspx?s=_newsarticle&id=982

Competition at the 2009 Australian IRB Championships will start tomorrow morning at 8.00am at Kawana Waters, Sunshine Coast.
